This was inevitable. I will be curious to see what they decide for protected bids and game locations.

College football is great because every single game matters; moving it to 12 teams diminishes the importance of being near perfect and simply will allow them to add in 2 or even 3 loss SEC teams in the future.

This is going to speed up talks with espn to get OUT to the SEC as soon as possible. Some rumors that it might kick in before 2026 but nothing solid
With conference champs getting autobids, OU make want to slow roll it to the end.

That only happens if the playoff selection is entirely dictated by a human committee. While the BCS wasn't great, having a non-human element gave the non-powers more of a chance.

Every game does still matter with 12. It’s not like 1 loss teams couldn’t get in before.

Why does this make college football great?

And if near perfection matters, not every single game matters. In fact, very few games matter after week 5.

I think OUT stays until their contract with the Big 12 ends in 2025. I feel the buyout is just way too big and that they will wait it out.

You can't convince me there are 12 true title contenders each year. People want more parity but are going to be disappointed when the same teams are in over and over. I do hope the G5 gets throttled since they think they belong even when they don't

Edit: this also devalues the regular season, and non-CFP bowl games even more

ESPN is going to fund it.

Applying the "top 6 champs + top 6 at-larges" model to 2014-21 results in very few changes from the original CFP/NY6 participants, and all of those changes are the bottom end of the list -- mostly kicking out the secondary teams from leagues who have advance deals with the bowls.

2014: IN #11 K-State; OUT #12 Ga Tech
2015: IN #10 UNC, IN #11 TCU; OUT #12 Ole Miss; OUT #16 Okla St
2016: IN #10 Colorado; OUT #14 Auburn
2017: no changes
2018: IN #12 Penn State; OUT #15 Texas
2019: IN #11 Utah; OUT #24 Virginia
2020: IN #11 Indiana; OUT #13 UNC
2021: no changes

Only way this works is to push the semifinal games into the first Saturday in January. Good luck going against the NFL that day

A quarter of our future conference is currently G5

Are there 68 true title contenders in the NCAA tournament each year? Of course not, but for some programs just reaching the tournament is a massive success. The expanded playoff will be similar. We will continue to have 3 to 6 championship caliber teams in any given year due to the nature of recruiting and talent acquisition in this sport. But now there will be more room for those next 15 to 20 teams in the next tier of college football to actually stay part of the conversation as the season goes on. Just consider, if the playoff was 12 teams in 2020, Iowa State would have been in it.

I'll enjoy this about 4% more if you have to win your conference to get a bye. I'm also curious if every game will remain on a neutral field or if first round goes to teams 5-8.
