*** CFB Championship Week Games Thread***

I disagree with the 8 vs 9 conference game stuff. I personally think conferences should only play 8 conference games and the SEC has it correct.
I wouldn't have an issue with the SEC only playing 8 conference games if SEC schools played 2 P5 non-con games. It is an advantage to have 3 G5 or FCS teams on your schedule. Especially if you can schedule 1 of those games in November.

I would agree the SEC is the deepest conference going 5-6 deep each year. But the bottom 8-9 teams are just like Iowa State, Minnesota, Purdue. It's not like Bama only plays the BEST OF THE BEST.

Sabin can dwell on Bama passing the eye test, but the reality is they lost to both SEC really good teams they played- LSU & Tenn.

I like a 12 team playoff because the decision of who's in/out will move from teams with a realistic chance of winning the Playoff, which I think Bama & Ohio State could do this year. To teams that could pull an upset, but not likely to win 4 straight games against Elite competition- Utah, K-State, Washington, Oregon.

There's nothing preventing Iowa State or any other team from scheduling a non-con game later in the year. Non-con games are usually set years in advance so if you schedule one in November then the conference has to schedule around that. I am actually surprised more coaches don't do it seems like a no brainer.

Ironically, the last time Iowa State did that was in 2002 vs. UConn. The 7-5 Cyclones lost to the Huskies and were shipped to Boise with a 7-6 record instead of going to Orlando with an 8-5 record.

I remember that pretty well. ISU was wobbly the last month of the season, and UConn had been playing some good ball. So of course that happened.

Thankfully the 2018 Drake game didn't see the same fate.

I was thinking more of an easy opponent like a directional New Mexico or directional Idaho school.

The college of Northeastern Idaho State.

ISU-UConn ended up in November because ISU-Kansas got moved from that date to the end of August for TV purposes.

Point is, it was played in November and did not work out so well for ISU.

It's the difference between intentionally scheduling a game on a certain date (as was the point of the discussion) and ending up with a game on a certain date because of shifting around.

I didn't realize that's what happened. But makes sense now that I think of it.

I don't remember seeing an early schedule for that season that had it flipped, only the actual version, and thought it was strange to have that end-fo-season non-conference game (and having a conference game so early)

Fair point, but the scheduling change happened before the season, and ISU had all year to prepare for the ramifications of the UConn game. It was there when ISU was 0-0, when ISU was 6-1 and when ISU was 7-5. My point is that playing an OOC game in November isn't always an advantage. At least not for Iowa State during my time as a Cyclone fan.
