Cell Phone Options

Get your phone unlocked and buy a sim card once you arrive in-country. Way cheaper than purchasing furrin' calling privileges.
All the good phones today don't have phyiscal sim cards, they have esims. You can buy a local or regional plan before you arrive and activate it instantly upon landing. I believe they still need to be unlocked.

I'm on mint and it's fine, they use T-Mobile towers. If you're going with a low cost carrier just find out which towers they use and look at the coverage map

Who buys insurance for their phone? Over 25 yrs now haven't ever needed it for anything weird.
Not only do you pay a monthly insurance fee, but if you do file an insurance claim you have to pay a deductible on top of that (usually around $250). It's a complete rip off

Ya'll are behind the times. I drop my phone quite a bit even with an Otterbox on it, sometimes the screen cracks. $30/mo for 2 phones and I've never paid a deductible. Works out in my favor.

We switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and saved a ton. We pay around 130 a month for 3 phones, a kids watch and an iPad (5 lines) and got all new devices when we switched. I We added a couple lines when we switched but I want to say the same type of setup through Verizon was 200 plus. We've got unlimited data and 50GB of hotspot per device.

I've also heard good things about Google Fi if your an android user and Mint mobile.

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile last winter. I had an old grandfathered in federal employee discount plan they kept nickel and diming and it was new phone time and all of the new plans from V were priced mostly as 2 to 3 or more lines. Old single guy so getting a discount for a family full of lines was no help. T-Mobile had a whole array of single line senior plans (Verizon had none) and picked a moderate one for myself that gets me full coverage in Mexico which my old V did not.

im way too lazy to ever switch

i despise going into phone stores, even for a new phone.

Last time I upgraded my phone (early ‘24) and went to the Verizon store it was a treat.

Tried to upsell on everything from home internet, streaming services, and so on. Caught off guard when I didn’t want to finance it and pay in full on my CC. Then bewildered when I didn’t buy the phone insurance.

Not as bad as a car dealership, but getting uncomfortably close.

That's incredible. In like 20 years I've never cracked a screen, my wife has never cracked a screen. I always run a case, but it's never an otterbox. How does this happen so often? Do you fall a lot?

Just drop it a lot.....working on construction sites and everything is hard or sharp

All depends how often the screen needs to be fixed. Most of us never have an issue with screens needing to be repaired

FWIW, in Florida (only?) Verizon offers a specific senior (over 55) plan. Unlimited data. I think it's about $55/mo.

Good shmood. What do you want it to do, sit up and bark out the Star-Spangled Banner? (frowned upon in foreign countries, anyway)

I like my Samsung Galaxy. It does exactly what I need it to do and I stopped being impressed by expensive toys probably back in fourth grade. iiwii

Highly recommend Visible. I haven't had an issue in the 3 years I have been on it. Lowest tier is 25 a month. It's on the verizon towers

Haven’t Galaxy’s been on eSIM for the past 5-6 years? I’m pretty sure my s22 had an eSIM. Beyond that, the battery life is crap.

Larger phones still have physical slots, messed up setting up my S25 Ultra by popping in my old sim when all I had to do was click through the setup for the eSim to be activated. Easy fix with a trip to Verizon. But yeah, Airalo saved me a good chunk in Ireland.

I tried a couple of the cheap carriers like Boost and something else. I can’t remember. Ten years ago, both of the cheap carriers had basically no signal outside of larger cities. Worked great in Des Moines. Couldn’t even make a call or text most places outside of Des Moines. Even as close as Indianola and it was useless.

Yup, and Florida only. At least T-Mobile made a menu of choices for seniors nationwide. I don't use a lot of data gigs so went with the least $ plan that would still give me overseas and hotspots.
