Car buying advice

I can't tell you how many Impala and Malibu I see on the road still that are probably over 10 years old. Heck I still see some Pontiacs on the road too and they stopped making that brand in 2010. It's a shame GM doesn't really make a sedan other than the Cadillac now. Eventually will be looking for a car for my daughter in about 4 years and will be interesting to see what kinds of good used sedans will be available since there really aren't too many American motor companies making them anymore other than the luxury types. Betting those sedans are holding their value on the used car market these days.
I really wish GM would have kept the Impala. The last few model years produced some sharp looking cars, and I would love to have a full sized sedan.

Time is approaching that I need to find a new vehicle. Not a guy that knows a ton about cars.

What are some brands / makes I should avoid and what are ones that are good?

Would like to get something preferably in Ames area so what places in Ames are the best to deal with?
What are you using the car for? If it is just a commuter car there are some good deals on electrics if you have the ability to charge at home. You don't necessarily need a 220v outlet either as a standard 110v might be enough.
