...Cheering in the stands for ISU!

What, did you think I would say that I'd like to see him warbling badly timed, sophomoric cheers in the field before the game?

I believe Jeff Johnson is a *great* Cyclone. I think his blood literally runs Cardinal and Gold on alternating days. Jeff Johnson is a great asset to ISU and does a great job... at his job.

But...

It's time for an end to the humiliating, disgusting display they force him to do in pre-game festivities.

Let it die, let it end. It's not a tradition and never will be. It's an embarrassing display of ineptness. It's making fun of a great Cyclone supporter and employee. It is like putting a giant chicken head on Gary Thompson and making him run around the stadium to entertain fans.

Let it go. Let the band play more - heck, give the drum major the microphone. Make it college football again.

Go 'Clones

Jaysus, Marry & Joseph - I AGREE!!! Post of the year!

Agree, have the cheerleaders start the cyclone power chant. I think we all agree that cheer is a good one and a powerful one, but when lead by JJ on the mic it loses its coolness factor. (Or Coo Points) if you will

I would have to agree with this. JJ is a great guy, and a great cyclone. But it's all so forced and unnatural. Let the band play, let the music play, let the cheerleaders lead cheers (weird I know).

um i know jeff johnson and noone is making him do this. he loves iowa state and he gets the crowd going. he is the only person that starts "cyclone power" and gets jack trice going at the beginning of the game. i like the band but if they played the whole game and tried to get the crowd going it would be embarrassing/boring. let the man do his thing because for the last two years i went to the games to do the chants that jeff johnson had the crowd do because it was the only cheering really going on at all those two years.

I must be the only one that likes it.

I don't have a problem with Jeff, other than the fact that it's treated like no one has ever been to a Cyclone game before. I've been coming up to games since the late 70s, honestly, I don't need to be told how to cheer. I wish they could freshen up the act and do something other than, "OK, now I'm going to teach you how to yell, CYCLONE POWER!"

So are you a fan of the cheering or are you fan of JJ leading the cheers? If the former, then can we agree to have the cheerleaders lead the cheers instead? I don't think many people are arguing that the cheering needs to go all together, we're just saying having JJ lead them is a bit odd and slightly embarassing.

You know those instances in life where you are so embarassed for another person that you, yourself, get embarassed? Everytime JJ does this my face gets red and I have to look away. New regime, time for a new pregame. Maybe leave the band on a little longer, play some music to get people hyped up...even let the student section lead the same cheers JJ was doing...but his schtick has got to end.

I'd be curious to know how many of the people embarrassed by Jeff Johnson also loooove Sweet Caroline between the 3rd and 4th quarters. :skeptical:

I would agree that this is a tradition that could go to. In a close game, the time between the 3rd and 4th quarter is often the most intense time of the game. Teams take alot of pride in their conditioning and their 4th quarter performance, and you can tell that in between those quarters they get that extra little burst of excitment. The music needs to echo that type of excitement in the player, not appeal to the drunk co-eds wanting to karaoke.

Hamm's beer song out, JJ leading ridiculous cheer in. Sad state of affairs.

Back away from the curiosity there, Pandora! I don't see the two are linked. People choose to sing along with Neil. They "feel" it. I think what the people are saying here is that they don't feel motivated or moved to yell Cyclone Power when compelled in a phoney and forced manner. It's like , OK everyone, it's time to do these chants now so let's get them out of the way. Very 4th grade.

I must slightly disagree.

While I can not stand most of the pre-game cheers, the cyclone power has turned into something that could hang around. I sit in the middle of the South endzone. Most of the time the cheer is pretty tame to our ears, but in 2007 vs Iowa, that was freaking loud. not kinda loud, but holy crap, I cant think straight and I am 30 rows off the field loud. There were a couple of times early last year that it got close to that level too.

The cheer squad (with signs) and the band could lead this cheer just as effectively and less embarassingly. I think JJ was put out there originally to try and start some traditions. I think he has done his job and most of the fans know what the cheers should be. Now the cheer squad can lead them, possibly with the announcer saying, "Let's start CYCLONE AEROBICS..."

I'm a fan of Jeff, i liked the chear although it does feel forced, but almost everything feels a little false when the fans moral/atmoshpere is a little down. I think if we were winning it would not feel so forced though. If the players like it then we should use at sometime during the game.

I'm sure we'll figure something out with the new staff.

I'm thankfull we have Jeff Johnson! JJ is an awesome awesome cyclone supporter and works constantly for improving a lot of the little things at ISU. He's defintely fighting the good fight. Is he still on the P&Z commision?

Amen, brother. I just hang my head when he walks out there...it's embarrassing. JJ is a great ambassador for ISU...just not for those 5 minutes.

Chalk up more agreement that Jeff Johnson doesn't need to be out there (also, good guy and all. ect ect)

As for the Cyclone Power chant you don't even need the cheerleaders out there doing it... the student section is perfectly capable of starting that cheer (especially when the cheerleaders make the mistake of leaving their signs where students can grab them ), and I'm sure someone in the front rows is starting these chants (or would if JJ sat down)

Before Jeff Johnson started doing all of these cheers on field they invited the students out for a fall practice and pep rally, where they taught these cheers to us first so that we could help out on gameday when they introduced it. Really this is the forum for introducing new cheers if you want them... the student section is more than happy leading cheers (you don't really think the cheerleaders start all of the cheers do you?)
