Can Redemption

The garbage companies have figured out that they can make money by going through everything, not just the recyclables. They get money for selling the paper, plastic, metal and aluminum. Plus they dont get charged for putting it in the landfill.

Having to take the bags of bottles out of the machines is the worst. Especially because there is usually broken glass all over the place.

And then after you're done with that, you go back to handling people's food.

This also reminds me that when I worked at Hy-Vee, the store took the plastic bags people brought back and threw them in the garbage compactor instead of recycling them.

When i lived in South Dakota I still kept my cans. But I crushed them and took them to a scrap yard and they payed by the weight for the aluminum. Way better system.
There is a reason when you look at the top of a can and only see a few states listed at the top for redemption. The rest of the states have it figured out.

Never thought there was this much to consider with regard to recycling cans. Leave it to CF.

I think a better system would be to do away with the deposit entirely and have better waste collection programs in place. Maybe require all waste collectors to implement a recycling system to separate waste from recyclables before it goes to a landfill. They can sell the recyclable material to recuperate some of the cost and raise their customers bills appropriately if need be. I think it would be better for everyone even if monthly bills had to be increased a bit. And definitely be better for the environment.

I would gladly take 4 cents a can to keep the redemption center open in Marshalltown. I have a can box and a bottle box I let my kids manage and they get the money. BTW - I know the guy that runs it and I always tip him because he's a great guy and it would be a major pia to handle without that place. That said, I agree that we need to get rid of the deposit and just throw them in with the rest of the recycling. I just wish Marshalltown had the two can system. Our garbage companies require us to separate paper /cardboard from the rest and put it in a bag. I suspect I go to a lot of work to do this and it ends up in the landfill.
I go here too, great guy

I do think the next big legislative thing needs to get better about recycling or something like plasma arc the garbage.

I have no where to take cans and bottles around here. They had a redemption center for a long time staffed with under-privileged folks. Somehow they exempted the local places that sell these goods from having to take them back and now the redemption center has closed. I have about 3 years of Beer Bottles in my basement with nothing to do with em. Not much fun.

Huh? I've got a recycling bin through Stone and it's all sorted at the truck. The truck is separate from the one that takes my trash. It costs an extra few bucks a month but not enough that it's a big deal by any means. That said, all my cans go into that same bin. It's not worth the effort for how few we go through.

We use Area Sanitation and yes I have a bin for everything except paper/cardboard and they have a separate truck for recycling. You don't have to bag your paper/cardboard? I thought that was a landfill rule actually.

I use Cedar Rapids can shed. Just fill the box, and can take them to my local Caseys, they accept them, and I get money. Its super easy. If it was still one by one, I'd just recycle them.

I'd prefer to see it expanded to cover all plastic bottles like they do in some other states and maybe upped to a dime (again. like in some other states) so people don't just trash it since "it isn't worth their time".

This has been talked about and if you think it is a pain taking back beer and pop cans just add all plastic containers. The best method is curbside recycling. Drop the deposit and let the collectors make the money off recycling what they pick up.

Dear god that would suck. Why put so much of a burden on everyone, and the places that have to take all of this back? Like others have said make the trash companies deal with it, it would be much better for everyone and all material would be recycled. People would still be lazy and just toss stuff.

They can't stop taking cans. I believe it's against the law. If you sell it with a can deposit, you have to take it back. So even like a Sams Club would have to give you the deposit, even though they don't have a bottle return place. Nobody does this because it would be a huge pain in the ass.

The only way a store can lawfully be exempt from redeeming cans and bottles is if it has an Iowa DNR “approved” redemption center. The store must have posted a certificate issued by the Iowa DNR that identifies the “approved” redemption center, its location and the hours it is open.

So that's how they got around it. Wonder how that works now that it has closed. They probably will take some back but they make it as difficult as possible.

The bottle law is now making things worse in this county. I would gladly take all these bottles to the recycling center if they hadn't put a deposit on these stupid things. Now they sit getting gross and some end up in the trash fire.

They just need to get rid of the deposit. Most towns provide single sort recycling now so there's not a need to give an "incentive" to recycle. All our cans and bottles go into the recycling bin
