Can Ejim not dunk?

new thesis:

He's worried about getting his dunk blocked by taller, bigger guys and a.) not get any points or b.) getting hurt.

If this is the case he probably figures that if he lays it in it's not in his hands as long for those bigger guys to block.

Why doesn't Melvin Ejim dunk the backetball. I don't know how many times he's been wide open and can go up and dunk it but he rolls it over the rim or lays it off the glass. I don't know how many times he's missed. I wish he'd just go up with authority and dunk it.

He can obviously dunk it, but come one; he's a freshy. He's newer to the college level of basketball. Give him time to come out of his shell. He's making freshman mistakes which is expected, but later on in his college career he will come out and tear s*** up.

You get the shot off quicker if you don't dunk. I believe Ejim is trying to beat the bigger guys by getting the shot of quickly.

Probably smart actually.

WRNL takes a look at Ejims first season as compared to those of Wesley Johnson & Craig Brackins.

Freshman Ejim: Phenom or Phlop? | ISU MBB

For what it's worth Wesley was playing out of position as well. But it is not a bad thing to be in the conversation with a couple of guys who left early and were drafted to the NBA. Edge has a great opportunity to get back in his groove at home against some less than stalwart competition this week. He will still be challenged, but it is not like he will be facing the Morris twins.

He had some great dunks early in the year, but he's clearly in a funk and has lost some confidence. He is going to be one hell of a player for us down the road.

I think this is case as well, he's kind of hit that Frosh wall. In basketball when you lose confidence you start to overthink everything and not let the game come to you. Honestly though, I think when dunks happen is much more important than how often they happen.

Dunk or not I just hope to see a lot fewer misses in close then I saw this weekend. From lots of guys. It was clear that the team did not have its legs and it hurt on the close ones, and the shots farther out as well. If youre going to miss it, I'd rather watch a missed jam!

His freshman year is reminding me a bit of Haluska, who also fell off after a strong start. Both showed signs of serious talent though.

Haluska definitely fell off toward the end of that year and I'm guessing that may have contributed in some way to his decision to transfer.

Hopefully Ejim can rebound before the season ends. There are plenty of winnable games left. He definitely needs to be more physical on both ends of the floor. If that wears him out, then Hoiberg needs to be ready to put in a sub. I'd rather get 15 minutes of Ejim hustling all over the place than 25 minutes of him standing around.

I don't really care that he doesn't dunk. It is overrated anyways.

The thing that I get frustrated about is that he tries to avoid the hit around the rim. I lost count how many layups he has missed in close in traffic. If he would take the ball up stronger, then at least he might get the call. Instead he shies away from the contact, and gets nothing from it.

I agree that he is playing out of position, and that when he gets to play strictly on the wing, he is going to be very good. But even then he will have to take the ball to the hole strong. Plus since he went to prep school, he is not a typical freshman.

He will be fine. This, and defensive footwork by our bigs, are really the only things that I am concerned about.

And not just dunks but alley-oops! I've never seen a team give up so many lob plays like TCU did today.

However, in fairness to the OP, I had similar doubts about Ejim when he was a freshman. He definitely did shy away from contact and did not take the ball strongly to the rim. Obviously, he's gotten better at that. :-)

Bonus...he didn't get stuffed by the rim today either!:pwink:

Well, to be fair to the OP, Ejim proved he can dunk a basketball today, but maybe not a backetball.
