best news ever!As an out-of-towner, I was shocked to learn on my last visit to HP, that they have no TVs.Do NOT go to Hickory Park. Might as well tell someone who's never been to Ames to go to Applebees.
Might be a bit of a hot take, but I miss the old Wallaby'sAs an out-of-towner, I was shocked to learn on my last visit to HP, that they have no TVs.
We went during a MBB away game, hoping to eat an an Ames landmark and watch the game. I think we ended up at Wallabys
I am flying out for the BYU and Utah games. Will any of you visit February 21st for the bball game?
I won't be able to make it to Ames this year but plan to in a couple of years. My family is originally from Topeka/KC, but don't hold that against me. Now, I'm a western man at heart, loving the wide open spaces, mountains and even deserts.
Do NOT go to Hickory Park. Might as well tell someone who's never been to Ames to go to Applebees.
Overall best choice: The Cafe
Like the Cafe but more upscale: Aunt Maudes
Pizza: Great Plains
On Campus: Cafe Beaudelaire
Pizza on campus: Pizza Pit
BBQ: Watcha Smokin (in Luther)
BBQ without leaving Ames: Cornbred
Burgers: Flight (in Huxley)
Breakfast/brunch: Provisions Lot F
When our kids were little, it was a great option: fast, sundaes and candy shop.I've noticed that the only people who recommend Hickory Park don't live in Ames. Nobody who lives in Ames even mentions Hickory Park to people who ask what the best places to eat in town are.
Coldest take in Ames restaurant history, new Wallaby's can't hold old Wallaby's jock strap.Might be a bit of a hot take, but I miss the old Wallaby's
Edit: Is this the Ames Restaurant thread? The team is 5-2 and we are so down about the team we would rather talk about food than the game on Saturday.
It's a classic Ames establishment. The food itself is not anything over the top, but many people are looking for an enjoyable dining experience that doesn't cost $100. It has a good atmosphere, perfectly fine food, and is culturally midwest. Not everyone is looking for a michelin star restaurant. I'd argue it's kinda silly to come to Ames, Iowa, and seek out ethnic food. I'm sure there are some local favorites, but the area is 99% white lol.I've noticed that the only people who recommend Hickory Park don't live in Ames. Still go there to eat. Reasonable price, good service, good food. As far as BBQ? Whatcha Smokin > Smokey D's > Cornbred > Jimmy's BBQ in Boone > Hickory Park > JethrosIt's a classic Ames establishment. Ice cream still top tier IMOI was unaware that people went to Hickory Park for the meal itself. For my family, it has always been don't fill up on supper, save room for dessert! I have not been in several years, but would be quite disappointed to hear that the sundaes, malts and soda fountain are no longer worth it.
The ice cream is the highlight of the meal by farIce cream still top tier IMO
