*** BYU Pregame Thread ***

They have a really fun offense.

Led by established stars RB Chase Roberts and RB LJ Martin. Two really good experienced and strong football players.

Then you have the emerging stars loaded with talent in QB Bear Bachmeier and speedster WR Parker Kingston.

Bachmeier is a load, very aggressive downhill power runner who is more athletic than you'd think. His game is kind of like a peak Joel Lanning type skill set.
Bachmeier is basically the Diego Pavia skillset. That's functionally what we're up against.

On defense I'll start with LB Isaiah Glasker. This guy is an absolute freak. Former WR, and his athleticism shows it. His highlight film from last year speaks for itself. Hes like their version of a little bit different type of a Will McDonald. i really don't think we can block him and he will affect our playcalling a lot.

their other best player is probably LB Jack Kelly. 5th yr senior more traditional linebacker. Just a classic smart tough and productive MLB.

The other two guys of note are 4 star sophomore safety Falatau Satuala. Tall athletic do-it all safety. His physical body type and skill set is like an Xavier Nwankpa, who was a 5 star himself for the same reasons. Can't teach that body and athleticism.

Evan Johnson is a rangey opportunistic CB who makes a lot of clutch plays when they need it. Elite in the red zone. Him and Satuala on the back end, along with Glasker applying pressure, is why they are #3 in the redzone and pair well together.

Anything to add here @BYUTexan ?

Yes. Zero pass rush, zero sophistication with blitzes / stunts, predictable 3 man rush with subpar linebackers. It's not good.

What an absolute joke Notre Dame is ranked one spot behind BYU with two losses. Seeing that makes me loathe college football lol.
I think we've tried a lot of blitzes this year, our linebackers just aren't very good and no one on the D-line is a good pass rusher so no one gets home and we get burned.

Why do people think a 4 man front is automatically better than a 3 man front when it comes to stopping the run?
3-3 or 4-2 is typically 6-man box no matter how you slice it. That's just making the front of the line wider and sacrificing the second-level presence instead (unless people are advocating to go 4-3/3-4, which is a whole different discussion).

As a BYU fan, all knowledgeable fans know your coach is top notch, and that your team is to be respected. At the beginning of the season, we expected this to be a loss, and we still won't be surprised if results in a loss, even we are of course disappointed.

Rocco is an excellent QB, and your coach gameplans well. Having two weeks to prepare for a team emotionally taxed after a rivalry game is always a concern.

Your fanbase at your stadium is excellent and a definite advantage for your team, and your team rises to the occasion.

Nonetheless, BYU has a solid defense, so it should remain close absent an uncharacteristic slew of turnovers.

Bachmeier shows calmness and poise uncommon for his age and experience. It should be a barn burner, but given your unfortunate injuries on defense, and Bear's unexpected development, many believe, and I concur that BYU has a better chance than it had before the season unfolded.

Love the passion of your fans, players and coaches. Looking forward to basketball again as well. Go Cougs! Go Cyclones! Go Big XII (except for the Utes)!

Those resumes look pretty damn similar to me. We're stretching quite a bit there.
There is substantial east coast bias because GTech got a big boost from defeating an ordinary Clemson squad and the Big XII has a great record against the ACC.

However, it will play out. I suspect that Tech is overall the best team in the Big XII, the recent loss notwithstanding and that BYU, Cincy and one other will compete for the CCG spot.

The best team in college football is Ohio State and the rest of the bluebloods are close, but even darling Alabama has weaknesses.

It would be great for the Big XII to get two teams in CFP but it appears east coast bias is positioned to give it to the ACC, unless the dominos fall right.

It’s so very hard to watch the defense with no pass rush! What’s worse is watching the LB’s drop where two of them are in the same area or defending nothing. No one around them. What teams have done is throw longer routes - because we have no rush - and throw over them and in front of the safeties.
Heacock might need to blitz one LB on passing situations and mix up who’s blitzing. It’s better than wasting one who is doing nothing in coverage.
