I've read a bunch about this and even though its very rare because of the exactness of the timing of the hit needed, there are thousands of these collisions in an NFL game. How has this not happened before? Are there really no underlying conditions with an event like this? NFL hasn't ever seen anything like this across thousands of games, millions of hits and tackles, etc. How?

Not every collision in the NFL hits the right spot. So #1, you have to hit the exact right spot, near the heart. You have to have the timing perfect, off by a few milliseconds and its no problem. Third, some people if you hit the exact right spot and the exact right time and even that won't necessarily cause the problem.

Also read its more common in young people, so adults in the NFL are less likely to have the problem.

Probably been said, but could they just shorten the week between AFC/NFC championships and the SB to one week and push everything back?

This is obviously pointless in the grand scheme of things, but fantasy championships were on the line with the game as well. I really wonder how this will work out.

Good question. But the conditions are much more likely to occur in a baseball game… and look how rarely it occurs there. So the chances are just extremely low. One in greater than a million type scenario.

My friend from work told me this morning that it happened to his high school teammate during a lacrosse game and he passed away. So I think there are plenty of examples out there they are just very rare in all types of sports at all levels.

Not that anyone really cares about it, but that off week is the week of the Pro Bowl stuff. Lots of money probably tied up in all of that.

Yeah can't they just call it a tie and let it work out from there. I believe both of these teams are already in the playoffs right?

I'd treat fantasy leagues like they do injuries. If you're QB leaves the game with an injury in the first quarter, you don't get a do over.

I bet the work it’d take to pull that off is impossible. If they can’t restart it today or tomorrow the only reasonable solution is calling it a no contest and moving on.

I think no matter what it's going to affect money so they'll have to figure something out.



The other scary thing is what if this happens again next week or the week after?

Heavy impact on seeding and potentially a division champion. Calling a tie gives Cincy the division and KC the inside track for the 1 seed. If it's played to conclusion, then a bunch of different seeding scenarios arise.

I said from the start it was a 3-7 game when they called it and given the calendar they should just agree to accept that as the final score and move on from there. Now by trying to play the game you are potentially going to be risking players by having them play on short rest at the end of a long season. Just put it on the books and let the players prepare for their next game.

While I've known for a long time that 911 can't necessarily triangulate to where a call originates (used to be a farm news reporter and every time I'd drive past a giant grain elevator I'd try to find a road/street sign so if there was an explosion, I could tell them where I was calling from), it still never resonated with me on how to prep, so I always know where it is. It can pinpoint where you are as long as you connect. Read more on that website. This is an example.

Yep this is essentially correct. This is a very rare thing that happened and as far as injuries in the NFL are concerned something that is doubtful to happen again. It was just a perfect storm of conditions that allowed this to happen.
