NFL: Breaking news

How do either Payton or Williams retain a job in the NFL is still amazing to me. I don't like to over react to things, but if they were actively telling their players to hurt other players neither of them should have a job.

Just my opinion.

The question is, how involved were they? What did they know? If they just knew it was going on and nothing more, and simply did nothing about it, despite warnings from the league, then I think the levied punishments are pretty fair. But, if any one of them was present for anything like the aforementioned locker room speech, and still did nothing, well then they probably deserve more. Especially Payton. Williams was his coordinator. If he knew the specifics about what was being done and said, and did nothing, his fate ought to be the same as Williams.

apparently this was right after another warning

The NFL had warned the Saints before the playoffs began that it had re-opened its investigation into the team's bounty program and the incentive program needed to be stopped but that warning apparently was ignored.

The more I read the worse it gets

On Smith: "Every single one of you, before you get off the pile, affect the head. Early, affect the head. Continue, touch and hit the head."

On Gore: "We've got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore's head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways."

On Kyle Williams: "We need to find out in the first two series of the game, that little wide receiver, No. 10, about his concussion. We need to f------ put a lick on him right now. He needs to decide. He needs to f------ decide."

On Crabtree: "We need to decide whether Crabtree wants to be a fake-*** prima donna, or he wants to be a tough guy. We need to find out. He becomes human when we f------ take out that outside ACL."

On Davis: "We need to decide how many times we can bull rush and and we can f------ put Vernon Davis' ankles over the pile."

Funny that this was the same game where Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore burned the Saints defense. Maybe they weren't hitting them hard enough in the head.

And Pierre Thomas got knocked out of the game on a legal hit. Kind of poetic in a way.

Player suspensions coming down now. Jonathan Vilma suspended 1 year. Anthony Hargrove 8 games. Will Smith 4 games, Fujita 3 games.

yikes. Guessing there will be an appeal, but I wouldn't count on anything being reduced.
