Thinking someone out here might know that's had a kid recently - wife and I welcomed baby #2 into the world right before Thanksgiving this year, and we've yet to receive her Birth Certificate or Social Security Card... Anyone with recent babies know if this is normal? She was born at Mercy Downtown.

Just got ours a week ago. Baby born right before Thanksgiving. That was in Ames though, but imagine it should be relatively the same. Maybe this week or next with the holidays.

I will add, this was the fastest we have gotten one for any of our kids. I think they told us it could be up to 6 weeks.

Usually took around a month if I remember right but it's been a few years, I'd give it a bit more time.

Our son was born at Mercy on Thanksgiving 2022. It took right around a month.

I just got an EOB from old old old insurance that the hospital finally got around to resubmitting the claim to them after they tried to submit it the day we went home and insurance denied it because the patient wasn't covered!

Just a heads up. Baby #3 was born a month early on Xmas Eve. Great! Because there's was another $1,800 of covid stimulus he was now eligible for, not to mention we can claim another dependent in general.

Get the birth certificate normal time, late January to my recollection. Just need that social security card, or at least number for that matter. Can't file taxes without it.

February comes and goes. March does too. Have to call the social security administration. They said they never received anything so he doesnt have a number or any card processing. Told to call the hospital.

Took a while and got the run-around because the charge nurse for our delivery was on vacation. Finally get the word after some time. The Nurse forgot to send it off is what I was told??? She said she had it luckily just didnt send it off, and she would send it to SSA immediately. Had to file an extention and wait until may or so to file my taxes when I got his card.

Didnt think that was a thing, but it is. So be on the lookout for that, I guess.

Wait. Wut? Covid stimulus for babies who weren't even conceived during the pandemic? That makes sense/

Well I don't recall if it was a "covid" stimulus per se. But it was a stimulus that was eligible for each child for the 2022 tax year, including babies born in 2022, as opposed to 2023, which was his original due date in January.

Edit: should mention he was still perfectly healthy being born early, BTW. So no need to worry about that, in case anyone was wondering lol.

When you do get it, double check everything is spelled correctly.

Nothing more fun than to get ready for college only to have stuff start getting rejected because name doesn't match SSA name. That happened to me and had to legally change name.

Then same error on my first child. We caught it immediately and got it corrected in the available timeframe.

Home birth in Iowa this summer. Got the social security card within maybe 3 weeks. The birth certificate took longer, but that was due to an error I had to get corrected. I got my first contact about it from the state around 3 or 4 weeks. You’re not at the point I’d be worried, but I’d start inquiring early January.
