My fist sighting of a Killdeer. My trusty old cat Purdy chased it into flight- you might say the Purdy and I tag teamed the Killdeer to get this in-flight image. The bottom image the Killdeer flew right at me and it is looking at the camera. View attachment 150170 View attachment 150171
I've got a couple killdeer on one of the routes that I run on. They are there every time so assuming it is by a nest. Have never seen one in flight though - great looking in the air. The ones I see on my jog just run around and squawk at me a lot. Haven't even gotten to see them do the limp wing thing they are known for. Great pictures.

Are they trying to lure you away from their nest? If you are real close they will feign a broken wing like mourning doves.

After reading posts on here, I installed Merlin and now I'm obsessed! Lol
It is identifying birds I've never seen (on the banks of the Mississippi in NE IA) especially varieties of warbler and videos, Now I've spotted the prothonotary warbler.

It's a great tool. Some experienced birders like to mock it but it's great for peeps like me that only know a handful of bird calls. Just have to be sensible with some of the stuff it calls out. It's right most of the time but not all of the time. Still, a great resource to give you a clue as to what you might look for.

Another crappy photo, but it's a rose-
crested grosbeak. 20250531_133445.jpg

I took 3 and I think this is the one where it looked at me and you can really see it's beak a red breast. (Or could, if I had a better camera!)

Canada goose molt migration is about peak right now. Lots of northbound non-breeders this weekend.

Watched this Great Blue Heron struggle with swallowing this big black bullhead last month. The heron kept stabbing it and dropping it and finally swallowed it. Thought he might take a break (big meal) but it kept on fishing!

On my wish list is getting a photo of them (or a Green Heron) catching a big frog.

@BoxsterCy, have you seen the nesting loons at Clifton French Park? They are not on Medicine Lake proper but on an inlet with a boardwalk and fishing pier across the road from the beach/sailing club/boat launch. Saw the nest with one loon on it yesterday. Was surrounded by turtles sunning themselves. We didn't see any activity at the section of beach they have fenced off for turtle egg laying.

Yes, I've been stopping over. Wow, didn't realize I was walking into "Turtle Fest" yesterday. Yikes, so many people. Did get to see the adult loons switch places around 3:20 pm so got a look at the two eggs. Than watched the adult that was relieved of nest duty swim the channel back out to the lake. Hoping to see loon babies this week.

He's an image of the two eggs. So much cottonwood seeds blowing around, just cover the lagoon and sort of makes for a messy photo.

Finally had some hummingbirds stop by, and of course then I realized how gross our feeder was, so I took it down and it came yesterday before the new one got here and it was trying to eat our patio umbrella. Luckily new feeder is up, so hopefully we'll get some more visits today!

We have used suets all year with no issues. Lately they are gone within 24 hours of them being put out. Finally traced the culprits to the European Starling. Hopefully if we leave them away for a few days those bastards will find a new area to roost in.
