Some Mallard Duck pairs out on a double-date on a local spring feed creek/wet land area just south of where my property sits. The bottom image is a partial of the full (file too large to upload) and the top image is a zoom in on the bottom image. P1300043-3-Edit-2.jpg

Had a Red Headed Woodpecker in the yard this morning. It has been along time since we saw one of those. A short time later, a Gold Finch showed up. A good start to the day.
Today has been a wild woodpecker day here. Had two red headed in my back yard and one in front. A red belly and downy too. Then I went to get an oil change and there was a red headed sitting on a traffic cone in a large parking lot which was odd.

Waiting for my wife to show up with the grape jelly, so this oriole decided to hit the hummingbird juice. Cell phone photo, through a screen, so not great.

Had a Cardinal visit the patio tonight, I know it's not exciting but first one we've had on our patio since we moved. Thinking my feed switch to a fruit/nut blend helped?

Have yet to see a hummingbird this year.

My experience says sunflower seeds (both kinds) is a favorite along with conifers to hang out in. There are always exceptions.

My wife watched and listened to a male Oriole fly into our living room window for over 2 hours this morning. Our house cat was watching also. Not sure what the Oriole was doing that it kept trying to get in the house.

Hawk on a post from planting time, cell phone full zoom using the vibrating cab door to steady. It'll just look worse if you swipe to enlarge. LOL.
Back awhile ago (about 35 years ago)- I worked in Des Moines for a large Savings Bank. On a trip to service an out of town branch with a co-worker, we ventured upon a hawk just like the one you have pictured. The hawk was enjoying a bit of roadkill- as the truck approached the hawk decided to try and fly off with the spoils. Unfortunately, the hawk was unable to get enough altitude to clear the, fully functioning, barbed wire fence. The hawk ended up with a barb stuck in its leg. My co-worker got out of the truck- he put on some heavy duty work gloves and proceeded to walk to the fence line. I was driving, so I carefully moved the truck out of the road. I watched the hawk settle down once it realized my co-worker was trying to help. My co-worker grabbed the leg, he told me after the hawk squeezed his thumb harder than any handshake he had ever experienced. The story ends with my co-worker heroically freeing the hawk to fly and eat roadkill and other furry creatures another day. "Now you have a story."

Posted yesterday to FB friends that I had totally struck out on and spying or photographing warblers this spring. And then late yesterday I finally got a good look at one. Maybe just a pedestrian Yellow Warbler but given the wind gusts to 30mph seeing anything was a bonus! And got an image where it's feathers were not completely ruffled by the big winds that day.

And saw a couple of Black-bellied Plover at MN River refuge in Twin Cities which were lifers for birder newb me. And later found a pair of nesting Eastern Phoebes in a local preserve near my home. So, all and all, a decent day.
