Big 12 Refs Strike Again

3truefans is more of a ref apologist than Blum and the ESPN crew. That's saying something. It was a bad call but not on the level of the KU game two years ago. I can live with it but that gets called more often than not, 100% of the time in b12 play that's a foul against KU. It's why KU fake wins the league so often.

I'll never understand it either. I'm not to mad about this one either because really we are still on track for 14-4 even though we played poorly and were almost on track for 15-3.

The ref apologists are the most annoying people in the world. Yeah a team could have done something better that would have made the call irrelevant. Yeah refs make mistakes. By no means does that make it so people shouldn't be able to complain about it or make it ok for the officials to continue to mess up.

We have to understand that refs can make mistakes and that's part of the game but we also have to understand that the officials have to be held responsible for the mistakes otherwise they will make more and more mistakes.

This lose is 100% on the POS play by ISU. Glad they lost.

This is as bad or worse than only blaming the refs.

Baylor does not suck. They played a part in how bad Iowa State played at times. Expecting perfection all of the time is a really crappy thing to do.

But the fact is that he did push off, that was a foul, and Iowa State should have had the ball and won the game. They didn't call it, that sucks, and we lost. It isnt' the worst call in the world and nothing that should live for years around here (i.e. I'll still happily bring up the 2012 Kansas game as an example of a game that we did win and Kansas is NOT going for their 10th straight title).

ANY fan who is happy we lost and thinks that a lesson needed to be learned is pretty much an idiot and not much of a fan.

This.

We want to hold the players accountable for their mistakes, but make one mention of the officials making a mistake and you get beat up.

We would have one last night had the last call been made correctly. Despite all of our mistakes (and lets not forget Baylor makes mistakes too), we would have won.

The charge called on McKay vs Gathers was a joke. Gathers was bulling his way through the lane all night. He flopped. Refs missed it....badly.

Its correct to say ISU didn't play their best game last night but poor officiating played a significant role in the ISU loss.

Finally, questionable officiating is part of basketball. If a person can't understand that, they should watch curling. On the other hand, its my god-given right to complain about it and will do so.

I only get upset if the officiating is inconsistent. They didn't change the way they were calling the game the last couple minutes of the game. Chery was pushing off all night and hacks in the lane were allowed to happen. Baylor made the adjustments and played based on how the game was getting called. We didn't.

I just hope the game in Hilton isn't called the same way or we may need to get a couple football players in our lineup.

"The Bears got away with plenty Wednesday night."

"The Bears got away with it on the final play of the game, too -- which, to be fair, was a last-second transition scramble, but still."

From Eamonn Brennan's recap.

There is a lot that could be changed with a call here or play there that could swing the game in either direction. All I know is the team played with enough effort to be up by one point until Baylor's final offensive possession where Chery pushes off and hits the go ahead bucket. Make that call and ISU is up 1 with roughly 5 seconds and the ball. Crazy things can happen in 5 seconds but I like our chances to win that game under those circumstances. If that is a push off in the first 5 seconds of the game, it should still be a push off in the last 5 seconds of the game. Life on the road in the toughest basketball conference I guess. As someone mentioned we lost on the road quite a bit last year and we were still in pretty good shape going into the tourney so not going to put much more emotional investment into this loss. Was pretty glad to see our guys fight back and hit some shots on the road when they needed it though.

Being down 16-1 was not the officials fault..........that was ISU's fault.

I am impressed that they came back and took the lead - although they lost on a last second shot, it shows this team doesn't give up and might be starting to get some of last years toughness. Lost a lot of toughness with ME and DK graduating.

I'm not going to blame the overall officiating of the game, the mistakes one the team made over the course of the duration of the game, or whatever else you want to blame this on. But the problem with your argument is that the refs demonstrated all game that a pushoff like that wasn't getting called. It wasn't a last minute thing.

Brutal missed call on the last Baylor possession.

Textbook offensive foul.

I mean... wow.

Great fight by ISU to get back in it; if they showed up to play from tip, they would have won handily.

Edit: Video of the play in question. Lots of ways ISU could have won this game, most of them within their own control, but this no-call is still inexcusable at a pivotal moment in the game

Lack of Free Throw shooting, defensive rebounding, and transition perimeter D were biggies. And stupid Hogue fouls.

This right here is how I looked at the game. Did Cherry extend his arm to get space on that last shot? Yes. Will 99% of D1 officials call the offensive foul in that spot? No.

The 11-19 from the line and 19 offensive rebounds given up along with a slow start is the reason this was an L. Good thing is we only have to wait a couple more days to put that one in the rear view and beat up on KU

Have no issue with the no call. With 4 seconds left, I'm fine swallowing your whistle there. If the tables were turned and it was Monte shooting over Cherry, and if they called that foul, I'd be ******. Plenty of other things to point to that caused the loss...

Yep, plenty of places to look at and scratch your head. BDJ's blocked call points taken back. Mckay's "goal-tending," Hogue's unnecessary fouls. People stepping out of bounds. Terrible boxing out. Mckay's placement. Shot choices early in the shot clock. Niang's inability to make bunnies (as well as others). The list could go on. But, the fact they were on the road and lost by 1 point to a pretty good baylor team? They still showed some toughness. They just need it for longer periods of time.

Regardless of how many points isu went down, we deserved to win. Our good streaks out weighed out bad by one point. That's all you should have to do

Refs missed a high consequence foul that led almost 100% directly to a Baylor win. It was an egregious missed call.

Players can't have the mindset that refs decide outcomes of games. I understand that. That's how every person is ever coached. It's how it has to be done just from sports psychology standpoint.

That does not mean someone who has no effect on the game can't point out an indisputable fact

That was a textbook push off. The only way Cherry had space to shoot was because of it, which is the very definition of advantage-disadvantage. But I knew they weren't going to call it at the end of the game like that.

Probably has something to do with integrating a new player only 6 games ago. They are getting it worked out, but it is a transition.

Refs didn't cost us this game. We got pushed around and let Baylor do whatever they wanted to in the lane. Spotting a team 15 points at the beginning is a real issue. I am glad we came back, but I thought it was a horrible effort at the beginning of the game and the end of the first half. We played great the second half, but the hole was too large at that point.

I have seen Nader get called for that at least 4 times this year. Tough spot for the refs. They naturally want to swallow their whistles and let the players decide the game but that was a push off. But not getting rebounds, missing free throws and not playing well for 30 minutes of the game lost it, not that one play.

Rebounding and free throws didn't help but they overcame those deficiencies to lead with 12 seconds left and the refs let Monte get shoved off the court. I understand that if we make a couple more free throws it would have been different, but the team overcame the bad play and led late.
