Big-12 / Pac-12 possible merger

I'm not saying it will be the same as now, but the competition will not be the same either. There is no reason that ISU cannot out recruit almost every single current AAC or MWC school for an athlete. Iowa State would literally be the gem of the G5 teams with a chance to go to a NY6 (or equivalent) Bowl every single year.
I know.

I'm just bitter because right now, Iowa State is a top-10, legitimate challenger for the Big 12 title, and a spot in the playoff for God's sake!

Going from that to being the one-eyed man on the island of the blind is a poor consolation prize.

It’s been fairly well documented that the remaining 8 teams do not move the needle much with regard to viewership. Thus, I question what benefit it brings the P12 to enter into an agreement of any kind with those 8 teams. Is Oregon/Washington/USC, etc just itching for a trip to Lubbock/Manhattan (KS)/, etc? What’s motivating that?
It’s been covered a lot here. We could improve viewership for P12. Their games are later and lose viewership throughout day. They would want access to CT Zone games, TX for recruiting, better competition, more visibility, etc.

Pac is in last place in revenue and continues to fall behind in perception. They are now the most vulnerable, but their location protects them to a degree. They are going to have to do something.

I keep reading article after article about how none of the Big 12 has value to another power conference. As a league, all Big 12 teams are deemed “damaged goods” and the likelihood of any team from the Big 12 heading to a power conference at this point in time is low. The ACC is the next conference that will get destroyed by the B1G and the SEC. these are the cards we were dealt unfortunately.

The only way I see this playing out is the Big 12 eventually adding teams from the AAC and taking less money to do so. It doesn’t matter how good we are today, this is about money. Frankly, I don’t know that I will watch college football anymore outside of ISU. It just bums me out. But, life moves on.
Just listened to XM radio on the college sports station. It was brutal. No hope essentially for the 8 Big 12 teams they said. Ari Temkin of Big 12 radio was on as a guest. The hosts were pretty much dismissing him like he is a damaged good piece too.

I would agree, and it really depends on Campbell and the staff. If by some miracle we could keep him and the staff intact, they have proven they can coach the hell out of 3-star guys. Matt gets people and young adults especially. Would we be getting 4-5 star kids? Maybe but probably not. But Matt and his staff have shown they are good at spotting great 3-star kids and developing them into their max potential. You don't need 4-5 stars to compete in the AAC. It's all about keeping Campbell and co. if that's where we end up as far as conference goes.

Not exactly. Only 8 PAC12 schools are AAU members. From what I've been told, they do have threshold of being Carnegie tier 1 research institutions which isn't quite as steep of a qualification. All current Big12 members with the exception of TCU and Baylor would qualify under that standard.

The only Pac12 schools that are not AAU are Oregon State, Washington State and Arizona State. So 9 of 12 are AAU.

Campbell is a rare bread and keeping him wouldn’t shock me. I definitely wouldn’t expect it at all if we lose P5 status, but it wouldn’t shock me.

Theres no way in hell we keep his coordinators though. And he’d likely have to take a pay cut himself, which again is why I wouldn’t expect it.

Might be the homer in me, but if we lose power conference status, I don’t this it lasts long. And that’s even if we lose it. I think CMC is here until the end though. So if 2025 is our last P5 year, that’s probably his last year here.

Just to try to make you feel better about it all: Both Cincinncati and UCF won the Big East and made BCS Bowls during the BCS Era, and they have both won the AAC and made the NY6 in the post BCS Era making less money in the AAC than they did in the Big East. So, if ISU does get set back a bit, the fact that the program is so strong right now will help soften the fall. That being said, maybe ISU can turn some heads by winning the Big Xii this year. Maybe, that will "move the needle!"

Obviously none of us want to drop out if the P5, like not even a little. But I’d be shocked if Iowa State didn’t have the best facilities and a bit of a recruiting advantage against other G5 schools.

I have a tough time believing there is "no hope" for the Big12 eight teams.

After the SEC made the bold move to add OU/UT, the ball is now in the Big 10's court. The Big10's response might take 1 month or it might take 6 months because getting difference makers to come on board could be complicated. From a Pac12 standpoint, to get USC and Oregon it might take bringing in x more teams. If the Big10 is looking east and the ACC, it might take a team of lawyers to see if there is an out in the ACC GOR. ESPN is going to need to redo the ACC Network deal. No way the ACC schools live with that agreement for 14 more years

Also, the SEC could still be on the prowl. Maybe they are still looking to add some big dogs like Clemson or FL State. Maybe they like Arizona & So Cal schools to go with UT and A&M.

Once the Big 10 and SEC have finished making their Big moves, then the solid realignment moves come into place. That is where Okie State, ISU and Kansas come into play. Very centrally located, those 3 Big12 schools would make sense in the Pac12, SEC or Big10.

I have a tough time believing the SEC stays at its current 16- they will just beat up on each other. The SEC is 8-9 deep and those teams are consistently better than anyone not named Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisky, Oregon and USC over the last 10-15 years.

And I believe Matt C. tends to 'go against the grain'. He has proven that already by what he has done and the fact that he is still here. He loves a challenge, he is loyal, he is not necessarily drawn to the blueblood schools or their systems. He is creating his own system, and a 5 star culture.

I believe he will see this new college football transition and progression through. At least to a point. I think he is going to want ISU to be and remain successful if and when he decides to leave.
All true. People need to keep in mind that CMC started his playing career at a power conference school at Pitt but transferred early on to Mount Union where they thoroughly dominated DIII. I think they lost one game in his career there. And he deeply admires his Mount Union coach. I think he’s the type of guy who would stay at ISU even in a lesser conference and drive the process to a 97-12 record. But I hope we stay in a power conference and he still puts together a 97-12 run…:)

Would LOVE to see Disney dump E$PN. If Apple, AMAZON and others get in the broadcast wars, the "worldwide leader of sports" would be an afterthought in about 10 years.
Would Apple, Amazon, etc. buy ESPN?

I like rare breads. Rye-pumpernickel is a really good one. Didn't know Campbell was one, though.

Ironic since the clones beat the best the pac had to offer last year in the Fiesta bowl.

In all the discussion of outcomes, this is the one I have the most confidence in!:)
