If we don’t get in the Alliance and the SEC plays 10 conference games, we are going to have to at least think about doing that too.

I’m kind of skeptical that the 8-conference-game, never play a real non-con road game, FCS-in-November SEC is really gonna go to 10 conference games though.

Of course they will. The new sec will be perfectly fine with being on an island. They don’t need any of the other conferences at this point. They will always get the benefit of the doubt for the cfp.

At least we are past the point of pretending this new conference will matter, or have a real seat at the table. So there is at least some growth happening

That makes zero sense. Why would the Big 10 want to prop up the ACC and PAC if they want to pick off their top teams? The last they would want is for USC, Oregon, UNC, etc to feel like the PAC and ACC might be viable. The more viable those conferences appear the less leverage the Big 10 has. It’s not simply join or not. It’s join or not and at what media rights forfeiture.

I hope they do. If they go to 10 games, maybe it won't take 10 years for Alabama to have to go play at Florida or Georgia.

The thing people are missing is that in order for the B12 to live for another day, we HAD to expand. We might have P12 leftovers available down the road, and we also now have promoted a number of schools, sure. But we were screwed and no one would take us seriously as just the Angry 8. This was the only option available to us at this time and eliminated any G5 threat that could have been out there from the AAC.

I agree with that point for sure. I just wish we could have landed some bigger names

Right. Saying the Alliance is a ploy to keep the ACC and Pac-12 "afloat" until they can be picked apart is one of the dumbest things I've seen on this site from a guy who produces an incredible volume of dumb takes

I would have been good with just BYU and UCF or Cincinnati to get back to 10 but it sounds like there might have been interest from PAC in Houston so take UCF and Cincinnati and bring Houston in to even out at 12. It's good to see BYU and UCF being excited about their future in the Big 12, not that the other two aren't, I just haven't heard anything.

This is an interesting read on Houston's path to a power conference. Their athletic budget was pretty ok for the conferences they played in.

Upgraded academics and athletic facilities. Houston was a good add

Yeah at some point ESPN is going to insist SEC teams play more than 8 conference games. I realize we are early in the season but yesterday the Bama/Florida and Penn State/Auburn were the only SEC games of interest and none were on the SEC Network..

I hope the new Big12 goes with 10 conference games. That also balances the conference schedule with 5 home/5 road.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the reaction from those schools' fanbases. I was actually a little skeptical those schools would want to tie their fate to the Big 12. It's been a successful move in that it quickly ended talks of the Big 12 dying and any dumb notions of the remaining 8 joining the AAC. Idiots.

That was always a tail wagging the dog situation coming from ESPN execs, and was never, ever going to happen.

Yes I agree with this. I think keeping them afloat long enough to keep the SEC in check, then let them fail to gain leverage on USC, Oregon or ND, UNC or who ever else they try to poach.

That was what I originally meant. Sorry for any confusion.

Just laughing at all the people that worked so hard to speak in absolutes trying to make this not seem like this isn’t a huge body blow for Iowa State athletics.

it doesn’t matter if the big 12 is 3rd or 4th in prestige, nothing is going to matter after one and two.

I thought this about BYU most of all. And I agree that we are able to add these schools considering there were some insistent on calling the remaining 8 a glorified G5. It is clear the new Big 12 will offer more than the G5 in every sense imaginable. It's just hard to know what the landscape will look like considering how far ahead the SEC and B1G will be from everyone else.

If the B1G and SEC had raided the ACC of UVA, UNC, Clemson, Florida State, and that league had responded by snapping up UCF and Cincinnati, the landscape would still be in the same place with the B1G and SEC far ahead, but the ACC would still have a seat at the table too. The Big 12 is kind of like that but arguably not as bad as that hypothetical.
