Better times coming?

I don't think anyone but Pollard and CPR know that for sure, but it is pretty safe to assume that is the situation, and then some of the guys that can't wait to fire CPR can move on the hating the next guy when he doesn't win enough games for their plans.

If the next coach gets pounded by FCS schools and wins 3 and 2 games well into his tenure, you're probably right. But I actually think next year sets up pretty well for at least 5-6 wins with Sam and a lot of talent back on offense. With the schedule and SEZ hype, attendance should be fine. It's the year after that will be a bigger challenge with the schedule and new qb.

After looking at the ESPN Insider recruiting rankings a little more closely, I'm starting to get a good feeling that we might turn the corner next year.

2010 - 28 commits; 7 ***'s
2011 - 27 commits; 7 ***'s
2012 - 21 commits; 13 ***'s
2013 - 25 commits; 1 ****, 22 ***'s
2014 - 25 commits; 1 ****, 23 ***'s
2015 - 16 commits; 1 ****, 14 ***'s

The staff seemed to make a marked improvement in 2013. That was the Lanning, Campos, Cotton-Moya, Meeks, class. Those guys were obviously RS FR this year.

Help is on the way. This staff is clearly working very hard on improving the talent. We're getting closer to seeing the payoff.
Keep drinking the Koolaid. I prefer to make it easier on myself and put things in the realistic perspective. Our recruiting classes are almost always ranked last and we usually end up almost always last. We're not very good.

Watching bowl games reinforces just how slow our defense was this year. We need an entire new front 7 to have any chance to compete. I hope he has a couple of JC ends and linebackers in the pipeline that can run.

Absolutely true. Watching these defenses fill gaps and play downhill is a big contrast to watching us play on our heels and get gashed for chunk plays over and over. Same goes for the offense. It's almost laughable how bad we are at trying to run those wide pass plays to the edge of the field. Slow throws, slow developing, and no blocking to boot.

I thought it got less fun due to drunks around us in our section. As the play got more disappointing, the drinking fans get uglier and more hostile towards what happens on the field and each other.

I found that I can be pleased or disappointed at home, while saving a ton of time and money. As we added children to the mix, that's just not something I need to pay for them to experience. The world can offer that mess later on.

That s where I am at. I'll admit it really bothers me. I just remember sitting in at the OU game this year just a few minutes in and thinking, I'm taking time away from my kids for this? I was cold, miserable, and instantly bored by a game it was obvious we were not going be competitive in.

I'm willing to deal with the weather, time, and cost if the team doesn't suck. There was almost nothing fun about watching ISU football in Jack Trice last year outside of the first half of the NDSU game. Basically the same thing the year before. It's been absolutely brutal and I have no idea why anybody would question why people would consider staying away looking at that and rising prices.

About 15/16ths of the KSU game was pretty fun...

I actually forgot about the KSU game. Of course sitting in the stands with my wife talking about how we were going to blow it in the 4th quarter, then seeing it happen again, was pretty excruciating.

Watching the Cotton Bowl, I honestly believe an anticipation of being as effective on offence as MSU against Baylor is not unreasonable.

I didn't read the thread so I don't know if anyone else pointed this out but our class this year, is the worst one we've had in years. I'm not sure how you're spinning this class as a positive.

Who are you considering a 4 star? Tucker is our highest rated player and he's a 3 star. We have the 69th ranked class in college football.

I'm just confused as to how the OP is seeing this as "better times to come".

Yep. Baylor's defense looked really good vs. ISU, and that only happened because ISU is just that far behind in physical talent.

I think next year will be a huge year for our football program. We will be a much more experienced team and it is our turn to have some of the close games to go our way. The schedule is easier early on, which will allow us to build up some confidence. This is what I see:

UNI - close halfway through the 2nd quarter and then we pull ahead for a 34-14 WIN (1-0)
Iowa - Entertaining 28-17 WIN (2-0)
Toledo - 48-7 WIN (3-0)
Kansas - 37-31 WIN (4-0)
TTech - 41-28 WIN (5-0)
TCU - 44-38 LOSS(5-1)
Baylor - 49-24 LOSS (5-2)
Texas - 35-31 WIN (despite best attempt by officials) (6-2)
Oklahoma - 31-30 LOSS (6-3)
OSU - 38-24 WIN (7-3)
KSU - 31-17 WIN (CPR upset special) (8-3)
WVU - 41-35 LOSS (8-4)

It is going to be a fun year for ISU football! And CPR will be back on everybody's list of coaches to hire.

Because it's small. What is so hard to understand about this?

There were times when I'd have these kinds of expectations, but the last 2 years have really sucked the air out of my sails of optimism.

Or as some would say, the last 2 years have really sucked.

I don't see how you can predict a W against KSU. They have our number year after year. Reminds me of the late 80's and early 90's against EIU. I just couldn't allow myself to hope there was a chance.

I hope like hell someone quotes this back to me next year and I eat crow. I really really hope so.

If ISU goes 8-4 then CPR will be fired, and the program will receive lots of sanctions, because lots of illegal things would need to happen for ISU to get the talent to go 8-4.

Moving forward, I would recommend watching more ISU football.

KSU has beaten us easily exactly once. I wouldn't say they have our number. They haven't lost, yes, but it's not like they do what Ou does to us.

I see the potential for 4 wins next season. We lack talent for a P5 conference and our coaching isn't good. It's no accident that we've won 5 games in the last 2 seasons. I appreciate those that are trying to be positive, but being honest, there's little to no reason next season will differ much from the previous 2.

Ha! Funny. I have been watching ISU FB for 35 years, so I understand your hesitancy. But trust me, next year is going to be a good one. We have been young and injury plagued over the last two years, and have had a lot of bad luck. CPR is a great coach. He is going to use that adversity and the experience gained by a lot of youngsters to turn this into a really good year.
