Best Donuts in Iowa?

Nobody's mentioned the state fair?

And you call yourselves Iowans...

Gross, the Fair is like the worst type of corporate big wig fart sniffing affair in existence today. When they let Iowa vendors vend, then I'll be interested. They made an entire outdoor venue for Iowa Craft Beer...why? Because they get a huge chunk of the profits from it.

Do you know where they put Iowa craft food? In a back room of the Varied Industries and they don't allow the companies to sell their products, only sample them. Nothing says "Iowa" like a giant mobile food operation from Canada. I hate the fair.

I don't care if they're from Canada or Syria, they taste good. The question was about donuts in Iowa, not from Iowa.

Maybe I'll get mocked, but I don't care. I'm a Dunkin Donuts kind of guy. Except on Fat Tuesday. Dunkin Donuts filled donuts are not paczkis.

The real question is if you can find a real paczki anywhere in Iowa.

My office is in a Polish neighborhood with Polish bakeries and we have several Polish women working there.

The paczki come to me.

Any 70s or 80s kids from Sioux City will remember Sunshine grocery store's donuts. I know the machinery to make them identically was transplanted elsewhere when the store closed, not sure where currently.

They were soft but crispy frosted cake donuts, a little bit greasy.

Donut King is a solid choice, although you need to be prepared for some rough customer service. If you're easily offended by the guy behind the counter not kissing your *** as soon as you walk through the door, you should probably skip it.

Just because it's closer to me I've also become a big fan of Donut Hut on Douglas Ave. Pretty similar styles/quality to Donut King, imo, and actually a really nice family that runs the place to boot.

Is he anything like this guy?

As long as the donut is fresh, I haven't met many that I dont like. I do like the donuts from highland bakery in Des Moines, but since that is on the north side and I don't get up there too often I mainly stick to Dunkin.

1. Fuhs Bakery in Webster City
2. Bread Garden in IC (Fri/Sat/Sun only)

You and I brother, would not get a long.

And as far as good donuts are concerned, the only thing good to come out of the Quad Cities is Tommy's Cafe.

Dutch Oven in Ames. Can't believe this hasn't been suggested yet.

As a transplant I'll come out and say it: Iowans massively overrate their state fair. It is really not any better than anyone else's. And all state fairs are a let down from how fun you think it will be when you decide to go.

This is why I like being a show stock guy, my state fair expeince is so much different than the normal mans/womans. And dare I say, a better experience?

Piece of advice, have friends in the cattle barn with a cooler, purchase one beer from Stockmans, refill cup from cattle barn all night. Your welcome.

I would have to say "0" next to "Iowa" on a football, basketball, or wrestling scoreboard is hands down the best donut in the state.

I tend not to discriminate when it comes to donuts. Casey's, Donut Land, Hy-vee, Krispy Kreme...I'll eat and enjoy them all.
