I have no doubt it's a different experience if you actually have a reason to be there. But the general population that is paying an entrance fee just to be hot, crowded, pay obscene food prices, quick walk by some livestock, and get sold a bunch of crap in the industries building? I guess I just don't get it.

I have two words for you:
Free stages.

Love the aging rockers & up&coming country artists they have on those stages. We usually pick one or two nights to go. It's cooler & cheaper in the evening...

Apparently no one in this thread has been to La Porte City and had the cinnamon twist donuts from the La Porte City Bakery.

I have, my wife is an LPC native. She loves the bakery there. While the cinnamon twist isn't bad, it isn't the best donut ever. The donuts that have become a favorite in my workplace come from the Golden Delight Bakery near Kalona. A coworker lives near there and brings in their glazed donuts often. Anything else pales in comparison.

My MIL lives close to Highland Park Bakery. It is my favorite Iowa bakery.

Highland Park Bakery on 6th is by far the best bakery. It is sad that people say Caseys or Hyvee. :skeptical:
Go to Hiland Park early in the morning. Open Tuesday-Saturday. You will never regret it. Believe me.

Johnson's Bakery in Waterloo used to be the absolute best, but the owners retired and closed it last year.

Rustik Rooster bought the recipes and equipment, but they just aren't anywhere near as good now...

Cake doughnut fans might enjoy Barb's Garden and Pantry. They sell them at farmers markets and in a few Fareway stores. They're pretty good; they're on the smaller side and can go overboard with the frosting, but they have some interesting flavors.

And, they're hiring.

I'll have to get down there and try it. I have to say, though, I am a bit skeptical. Every bakery item that I have tried from any bakery in Kalona has been horrible. Frankly, most small town bakeries are not very good...they tend to use shortening instead of butter and use other cheap ingredients.

The Co-op, Deluxe Bakery, and Bread Market Garden in Iowa City all serve consistently decent bakery items of all kinds.

LOLing the people ripping on Krispy Kreme and then praising Casey's donuts. Casey's donuts are nothing more than Krispy Kreme leftovers (at least at the Casey's that I have been at).

Casey's was better when they focused on cake doughnuts. Now they're trying to be like everyone else and have raised donuts, long johns, and so on. The last time I looked at one of their doughnut racks it only had three cake doughnuts in it.

Long Johns are the best

Donut Boy in Dubuque has these coconut crumble donut holes. They're massive, but since they're still technically donut holes, you can convince yourself that it's like a 15:1 ratio to make a whole donut...

Gross, the Fair is like the worst type of corporate big wig fart sniffing affair in existence today. When they let Iowa vendors vend, then I'll be interested. They made an entire outdoor venue for Iowa Craft Beer...why? Because they get a huge chunk of the profits from it.

Do you know where they put Iowa craft food? In a back room of the Varied Industries and they don't allow the companies to sell their products, only sample them. Nothing says "Iowa" like a giant mobile food operation from Canada. I hate the fair.

tell us how you really feel
