Im not sure there is a bad BBQ sauce, just some better than others based on preferenceI love BBQ sauce. And use a lot of it. But am not that picky. I buy the basic Aldi stuff. Either the Honey flavored or the Brown Sugar variety.

Memphis BBQ is sweet correct? I think id probably like that myself.I generally prefer a Memphis style BBQ sauce. I’m not sure there is a big national or local brand that fits that, but I can usually find something in most grocery stores.
The people who like it sure do love it. It is good.
I don't BBQ like you are talking. When people use "dry rub" are they generally mixing their own spices and then making their own sauce? Some combination of premade rub, sauce, or what? I really don't know the BBQ game. I assume it varies. If I'm actually smoking meats, I end up making my own. My problem with the store bought stuff is most of it has added smoke flavor. I prefer not to have that in a sauce after I just spend all night/day/both, trying to get a good smoke flavor in the meat. If I just had something in the oven or on the grill, I usually lean towards Sweet Baby Rays.
For my homemade sauce. I start with onions sauteed in butter with some garlice and a healthy amount of my rub sprinkled on. I let that cook for a bit on low, let the onions get translucent. Then I add 50/50 Apple Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar. A lot of it in a decent sized pot. I let that cook for a long time, until it gets to the consistency of maple syrup. Then I add a regular can of diced tomatoes and hit it with the stick blender. From there it's about adding a little ketchup and vinegar to get the taste and thickness you want.
