Badminton Teams DQ'ed

If they had been tanking because of betting or something that would be one thing, but they were strategically throwing the game in pool play to get the position they wanted in the final bracket. Nothing wrong with that and it is the organizers fault for setting the tournament up such that teams might be incentivized to do so. They are being kicked out for making the officials look bad, not for undermining the game.

I don't see this as being any different than a NBA/NFL/MLB team pulling their starters in the last few games of the season once the playoffs are set.

Plus several of the teams were doing it to avoid meeting their countrymen before the final, which is also totally fine by me. Again, it's the organizers fault not the athletes.
Wow.... there are so many things wrong with this.....

At the same time though, i can see how having a lower seed would be nice in some circumstances. Give us a 10 seed and we might have been sweet 16 this year instead of running into a buzz saw. still weak sauce.

I'm glad the Olympics had the balls to boot them. That was pathetic. You couldn't play that badly after a case of beer playing badminton in the back yard. If you don't want to play, fine, go home.

Pretty much the whole thing. This is what is beginning to be wrong with society today. "Hey, let's just skate by and do the bare minimum!"

NBA/NFL/MLB is one thing because they are professional athletes that get paid and (many of them) are worth millions of dollars to their franchises.

These athletes that compete at the Olympics are doing it under the Olympic Code which consists of respect, spirit, sportsmanship, and honor for your opponents and country. There is no room in this type of setting to "throw" a game or match. Individuals or teams work for many, many years to get to where they are and they would rather loose intentionally to get to their ultimate goal, the gold medal, than actually compete at the best of their ability is shameful. No place for this in this setting.

Nor is implementing a system that creates an incentive for losing.
That's why I said it wasn't just the team's fault. But just because the opportunity was there doesn't mean they had to go through with it.

Try reading the article. They tried to lose because of an upset in another match. This isn't the MLB, this is the Olympics. They have rules and a committee that can rule against this sort of thing. Too bad for them.

BAHAHAHHAA

Fail.

its the olympics not high school intramurals

Funny you mention this because when I was working the female intramural badminton tournament at ISU there was some of this too. The girls were basically trying to get shirts because the top 4 would get one. They all figured they couldn't beat the top girl but some of them thought they were good enough to beat the 2nd best girl. The tournament was pretty much wide open after the top 2, but I could tell some of the girls were trying to give themselves better placement in the tourney. We also did a round robin for seeding if I remember correctly.

Article read and there is still an incentive to lose. Just because there is "a committee that can rule against this sort of thing" doesn't mean there isn't an incentive to lose.

That incentive to lose just got ruined when the incentive to win is obviously more important. Because they lost.
