Audi Crooks to Transfer

Wow, I come back after a couple days to see if there's any news on Audi visits, and this thread has gone off the rails. Lots of Milan M discussion and some party Audi rumors. I don't want to go thru ten plus pages of this - is it safe to assume there's not yet any significant Audi news?

If we're going to sidetrack the thread with talk of (State of) Iowa party schools, I'll nominate Parsons College of Fairfield, IA. Per my parents, Parsons College pretty much partied their way out of existence in the early 1970's, with the campus later purchased by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I was in Fairfield for work probably ten years ago and drove around looking for remnants of the old Parsons - I did find a statue of the founder completely surrounded by bushes.

I'm thoroughly engaged with the old guys texting college kids to find out if Audi parties detour this thread has taken.

You are correct, No news on Audi yet.

I also agree about derailing the thread, Let's get back on track.

I've stayed relatively quiet as I processed the portal announcements, but losing Audi Crooks is devastating to the WBB program, ISU Athletic Department and ISU's reputation in today's social media world. Like many others on this site, I enjoy the "advanced statistics", specifically PER.

The Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a per-minute rating developed by ESPN.com columnist John Hollinger. In John's words, "The PER sums up all a player's positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative accomplishments, and returns a per-minute rating of a player's performance."

Since 2002-03, Audi ranks #44 on the PER Career Leader List at 36.82. For comparison purposes, other current or relatively current centers on the list include:
#31 Lauren Betts - 38.29
#30 Ayoka Lee - 38.36
#7 Sarah Strong - 42.75

People are suggesting Audi is a "ball hog". Here's a quick comparison to Final Four centers:
Audi Crooks - 31 Games - 493 Shots (15.9 / Game) - 64.9 FG%
Sarah Strong - 38 Games - 479 Shots (12.6 / Game) - 58.3 FG%
Lauren Betts - 37 Games - 474 Shots (12.8 / Game) - 58.2 FG%
Joyce Edwards - 40 Games - 538 Shots (13.5 / Game) - 57.1 FG%

Let's stop trying to rationalize this portal departure - it's nothing short of catastrophic and it stings this 63 year-old grandfather who has plenty of other things to enjoy in life, but elects to allot time to ISU and women's athletics.

Its a fair point, but you also have to consider minutes played. I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that AC rarely plays a full game. The data is pretty interesting.

Here are the leaders in shots per minutes played (first number) with minutes per game behind it:

Hannah Hidalgo - 0.56 (35.8 minutes per game)
Audi Crooks - 0.53 (28.8 mpg)
Sarah Strong - 0.47 (26.3 mpg)
Sinyah Hall - 0.45 (31.2 mpg)

From your list:
Joyce Edwards - 0.44 (30 mpg)
Lauren Betts - 0.41 (27.7 mpg)

Interesting that Strong and Betts played a similar number of minutes to AC but were 12% and 23% lower in shots per minute played.

If anyone is a ball hog, it's Hidalgo!

2021-2022: This was an easy team to root for - look at the offensive balance in this game:
Kane - 11 FGA - 10 Points
Ryan - 13 FGA - 15 Points
Lexi - 13 FGA - 20 Points
Joens - 14 FGA - 12 Points - named to 3 All-American Teams and won Cheryl Miller Award

We were on top of the world here - Ash announced she was coming back for a Super-Senior year, Lexi was an established all-arounder, Ryan coming off her best season and Stephanie Soares brough in for the post. I'd like a do-over please...

Sure, it’s catastrophic and stings but the reality is— Iowa State can’t pay her what the current market demands. Well CBF could, if he wanted to give Audi 80-90% of his total allotment.

I agree with the general thrust of this. That said, because of the nature of PER (entirely based on box scores), an athlete who is a negative on team defense generally will be overrated by the stat.

No elite player is going to pass up taking shots when the offense is designed to get them shots. Audi took a lot of shots because the offense was designed to get her shots. And why wouldn't the offense get her shots when she made 65percent from the floor and over 72 percent on 220 free throws.

Iowa State's issue wasn't the shots Audi took, but the 75 percent of shots that other players took. Plus the lack of a disruptive defense, plus only 3pt shooting perimeter players, plus a lack of a rebounding machine stretch 4.

What the problem was the system that was set up to turn the ball over a large portion ofthe time tryingto force it to the high statistical anomaly, Crooks. I dare anyone to show me how she pinned her defender consistently and had actual good opportunities to gather the ball cleanly in play. Our system was: pass the ball to Audi and if she is defended well, just accept the turnover. That was just plain stupid.

When she got the ball cleanly, it was often a good result. I would like to know how many turnovers there were on the low block that were in some form, Audi's partially at fault as well.
Are there stats on pinning your defender well and presenting a realistic opening for the feed? 'Cause all the stats you all keep bringing up can be interpreted differently and may be misleading. You need to compare that to what actually happens in the game before the shot is taken.

AND, I don't necessarily dissagree with your last paragraph.

im really not following any of who we are bringing in... any leads there?

Disagree. It's the state of affairs for all programs, and many high profile players as well. Particularly those playing at schools of ISU's ilk. Also, there were problems associated with the required style of play that we can now move on from. The worst part is that they won't make a clean break with the coach.

Exactly. And with a player drawing the attention that Crooks does, other players were getting a good number of easy looks. Maybe not the number of looks they might want, but the quality is not going to get much better.

Audi is a poor defensive player. She couldn't rebound outside of her area at all. Those things are true. But depending on matchups and the style of defense a lot of teams play, there are a hell of a lot of 5s in women's basketball that don't stray outside the lane. Could they, and are they more athletic than Audi? Yes. But there just aren't a ton of 5s that are extending and trapping, or needing to guard an opposing 5 because they can knock down 18 footers. With all that, the team was undefeated and top 10 prior to the injuries.

I don't know if it's cope or what, but if you are a 25 ppg scorer that shoots 65% from the field, you're a rare commodity and valuable. Not every team and system is going to be suited for her.

Probably the dumbest trend in college basketball is fans buying into the coach speak about how awesome somebody is because they can set great screens and whatever stupid nonsense. Those players that make winning plays and contribute without scoring are great. But if your team has three of those players on the court, you're not winning. Those players can only contribute to winning if they've got some high level scoring around them. As much as coaches talk about the players on their team that make great plays without scoring, when it comes time to talk about the opponent and who concerns them, it's like 95% the people putting the ball in the basket.

Scoring is far and away the most rare and valuable commodity. She's an elite scorer. She contributes to winning at a high rate. Provided she finds a good match in style, she's going to go score a lot and win a lot of games next year.

Audi has her shortcomings and her strengths. But honestly, after Addy’s injury we lost a major player. We were never the same. Jada struggled. The whole team besides Audi couldn’t score so we relied on Audi more and more. And we turned the ball over. The newcomers didn’t deliver.

Probably a lack of defensive effort from Audi as well. I mean a few of clips that you see there is absolutely no effort on the defensive end. I understand it might be based more on conditioning versus lack of effort. But lack of conditioning is oftentimes a bi-product of not putting forth the work in the off-season.

I always thought the poor defensive effort was an attempt to stay out of foul trouble because she was “the offense.” And she did for the most part. But certainly conditioning is a factor too.

I think a significnt part of the highly discussed "defensive effort" was actually by design in order to keep Audi from getting into foul trouble. How often do smaller players get bailed out by calls on a bigger player when the center reaches or moves much at all to defend against that opponent?

Some of the defensive effort may have been by plan, and not entirely due to effort or conditioning.
