Looking at the whole history of iowa state football - I don't know how anyone can not think what Matt Campbell has done here has been, virtually, what everyone would say is impossible.

The last 10 years has been the greatest 10 year period ever.

Your answer is to tear it all down and start over? What?
The Iowa State job that Matt Campbell took is also the best Iowa State job ever offered.

I hate comparing a coach today to the history of our program because the job and the environment around it has changed so much.

Past ISU coaches had laughable facilities. We are now comparable to the league. We have the second largest stadium in the league and attendance to match. Past coaches had a huge budget deficit, bottom of the league, and often by a large margin. We now have an AD budget in the top half of the league, without much of a gap to the very top. We used to pay coaching staffs at the bottom of the league, we are now at the league average and again not a huge gap to the top.

We used to have ADs who were like BVD who were just terrible at their jobs. We now have one of the best ADs in the business. We used to have university president's who were outwardly hostile to athletics, now the president's office appreciates the value of sports. We used to have a massive exposure disadvantage, hardly ever playing on TV while conference mates like Nebby or OU were on national TV weekly. We now play every game on TV. Making a bowl game used to mean you were truly great, now it is a guarantee if you are .500.

So comparing CMC to something like the Duncan or Criner eras and saying look how much better he is than what we had before doesn't really hold water. Those guys would have had a lot more success coaching here today, and CMC would have had a lot less coaching here back then.

I wish people on either side of this "rot" debate could wait until the season is over at least. CMC is not getting fired after this season regardless, so it's moot. Plenty of time to talk about whether or not his seat should be hot after we actually know what happens this season.

We all know Matt Campbell is the ISU head football coach for however long he wants to be. It's just that we're looking down the barrel of another 7-6 season (probably lose to Nebraska in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl) which is disappointing given the great start.

7-6 would mean a bowl win actually ;)

Possibly, or we could win out. I'm not going to argue if you think losing out looks a lot more likely after Saturday, but it's not like we are facing a murderers row to close out the season either. Cincinnati and Utah don't have near as much offensive talent as KU. This constant back and forth of one side calling out the other after every win and loss is getting really stupid, but I guess CF is gonna CF.

Either be positive and support this program or just go support a blue blood. So sick of the people that are giddy after a loss to do the “told you so” move.

Just leave if you’re truly that miserable. No one is holding you captive here as an isu fan

I don’t dispute any of these comments which are valid. Here’s another way to evaluate current & past Coaching staffs…..NFL talent. The only staff that recruited at the current level of talent that are on NFL rosters was Johnny Majors. Most coaches produced a few but CMC is getting multiple NFL level talent every year. If you want to dig deeper check how he compares to other Big 12 schools currently and how that relates to his win/loss in conference. I think we are getting our money’s worth. But like everybody, I’m disappointed in the TT loss, not so much the KU loss. I’ll wait until the season is over to judge.

I think this is a better perspective. You have to measure what we are doing against our peer programs today to determine success. You can't measure against the history of ISU.

I'm not going to dog on the coaches very much here. This is a team that has had way too many injuries at key positions. Plus, there is now a lot of game film on ISU. We are simply being exploited and until we get some guys back, this is where ISU is. I'm 100% confident if we had our starters back, we would be unbeaten.

You made this thread because you knew we’d be 7-2 this year so you could own all of us? Damn you really are playing chess.

Tell me - if you’re JP, what do you do? Gonna need specific names of who you want
Laughing with you my friend.

What was the answer to that question 10 years ago? It was your lord and savior Matt Campbell. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Why do you have to bring a "religion" slant to this?

Being anti-religion, especially anti-Christian, is YOUR religion. We give you that right. You should do the same. You won't though, It's your war, as you once called it. Put that in your pipe.

Carry on.

Edit: @Gunnerclone Sorry for the rant, but don't you do this enough in the cave?

It’s a figure of speech my man. Don’t get too bent out of shape about it.

Slight addendum for you. Otherwise your points are noted and valid.

Nothing wrong with wanting more/better.

Matt Campbell prior to this season has 18 wins against teams that finished with a winning record. 5 of them came in 2020. He’s beating bad teams.
Iowa will have a winning record this year.
Arkansas State is 5-4 with two easy games upcoming.
Baylor and West Virginia are both 5-4 right now.

We still play Cincy who might have a winning record at the end of the season.
We still play Kansas State and our bowl game who will both have a winning record.

Couldn't have said it better. What a lot of people are missing is that everyone has a lot of game film on everyone. With starters leading the LB group, we could say "eff you, bring it". But with injuries and having to play 3rd string LB's with little to no depth at that position at this point makes it easy for opposing teams to target that glaring weakness.

Exactly. Stop being afraid to take the next step.

Having to build a team from scratch, which is what will most likely happen if you were to fire Campbell, would set this program back, probably forever.

He certainly isn’t getting fired after winning 7 games.

He would either have to leave on his own, or have 2-3 really bad years in a row for him to get fired.

I can’t believe this is even a talking point while ISU is sitting at 7-2 while playing like their 11th string linebacker and missing at least 3 other major contributing starters for most of last game.

Honestly what this staff had been able to do up until the last week or 2 is nothing short of incredible.
