Anthony Bourdain has died...Suicide

Very sad news. I didn't closely follow him, but did occasionally watch a show here and there. Also visited CNN once in awhile for his work on there. Never a great thing to see, I guess all we hope for is more awareness and that people pay more attention to those loved ones around them. Even though his issues were out in the open before, just goes to show that wealth and fame aren't always what they are cracked up to be. I'm an avid traveler and always seek inspiration from some of these guys, his tone wasn't my favorite like others, but he still brought something different to the TV/internet.

I'm not saying I'm a 100% believer this would be any lead cause, but I have been reading The Grain Brain by David Perlmutter. In his book he has repeatedly claimed and backed up his claims from research that gluten/grains can be a causation of anxiety, schizophrenia, inflammation, etc. What's everyone elses thoughts? I'm sure we'd hear more in the future of what happened here.

Depression has nothing to do with how famous you are, how popular you are, how much money you have, how many problems you have, etc.

The fact that there are still so many people that say “oh man, his life was great, what did he have to be depressed about?” tells us how far we still have to go as a society in understanding depression.

Checking with the thread police first to see if I'm allowed to mourn this man today, who I also was a big fan of. It looks like the prophet Mohammad died on this day in the year 632, so I'm taking a chance with this reply.

This one shocks me. I guess I didn't realize how big of a deal his addictions were, but others seem all too aware of them. I just thought he seemed like a great down-to-Earth guy on his shows, and had great taste. Didn't seem too uppity. Very sad to see him go, and wish we had a better way of identifying people who need some care.

Sorry, PC Poster. Do you need a hug? Gonna passive aggressively call ol' Malone out in every suicide thread?

Anyways, I enjoyed Bourdain's work. It was more than cooking; it was cultural and made ways of life we otherwise would not have access to, viewable. It's unfortunate and hopefully the recent passings of Kate and him bring about meaningful light and change in the way we think about mental illness and suicide. I have an aunt with severe issues and @CascadeClone couldn't be more spot on.

two things...I read somewhere that how suicide is reported can lead to additional suicides, particularly when the method is reported. Maybe not related but I wonder if AB took notice of KS suicide...seems oddly coincidental.

While I appreciate the public taking these opportunities to remind people of hotline numbers, etc., how about we spend more time paying attention to one another before we read about these things instead of because these things happened? I don't mean this in a condescending manner...I'm being honest and I'm guilty of the same.

I didn't know either person...and their love of food or their handbags are of no consequence to me...but I suppose if their manner of death provides a reminder to do something better, it's an unintended positive consequence of something awful.

There was a twitter remark I saw that said something like “Bourdain was one of the few people on television that showed us to accept and not be afraid of people that are different.”

And I think that’s pretty accurate. The show, while about food, wasn’t actually about food. It was about the cultures and the people and the stories behind the food.

not being snarky but why would anyone assume anything regarding people they don't know? That seems odd to me that someone would say they never would have guessed something about someone unknown?

Because of what appears to me to be a very common misunderstanding about what depression actually is (hint: it's not unhappiness, it's an actual disease) and the symptoms that lead to suicide. The common assumption that fame/fortune = happiness, and therefore, how could THAT person over there, have it so bad that they have to resort to suicide?

Of course we have no idea how they really feel, but it's very easy to think that someone is very happy, because, to all appearances "they have it made." But in cases like this... that's actually completely irrelevant. But it's hard for many people to disassociate the two things.

yep...i get what you're saying...it's simply strange to me that anyone would make that assumption. In this case, the ONLY thing you see of them is what is portrayed and scripted? You think their going to show them at their darkest hours? IDK...I ceased being surprised by "famous" people long ago.

Fine, forgive me for not being able to see inside his head

Carry on.

I genuinely wasn't trying to be a jerk...but I've heard that same comment a dozen times the past few days and simply don't understand it. It was as much a question as a comment.

The thing is you’ve touched on one of the most insidious things about mental illness - we don’t know something’s wrong until it’s too late. As someone who didn’t know him personally, it’s eqsy to miss that stuff.

Just more proof that success and fame is never the cure.

Sorry to be snippy, it’s been a long week

“Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria's mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.”

RIP Anthony Bourdain. He was an inspiration to me and my travels/food adventures. He was the perfect amount of ******* and I will miss him greatly.

Back in the day they hardly ever reported suicides as suicides. They just reported the death and the family would cover up what actually happened. There was a stigma to it. Now that the internet and 24 hour news is around. They can’t do that any longer. Celebrity has nothing to do with it. Usually it’s past demons catching back up to you and you feel like u can’t win.

This thread, along with the dirty jobs thread brought up something that I hadn't really thought about in quite a while-

Possibly the most important lesson that my dad taught me was how to find the humor in adversity. He always defused our anger and frustration with humor. He always found the funny part of any situation. It actually made us more angry at times because we were mad enough that we didn't want to laugh, but he'd persist until we did.

Whar Royce? This seems like a thread in which he would have plenty to say.
