Anthony Booker

Percy has a lot of potential. When its all said and done, I bet he will have had a more successful college campaign than Booker.
Percy was considered the best big man in the state of Michigan. He's no slouch.

May be true but we are talking about this year. Percy won't play nearly as much as Booker.

I guess I see Railey's role this year as coming off the bench and using his size if we are matched up against a team with a big line-up. Have him come in and take his turn trying to push around a big man, foul him a few times, wear him down and then head back to the bench.

I agree. I think Railey is going to play more than what most fanatics are predicting. You can't teach size and sometimes we are going to need a big guy like him down low.

Um, no he doesn't. And it is not even close. Booker has an overall more polished game (skillset) for a post that we've in a long time. Booker has the athleticism of a 3 and the size and strength of a 4. Unless something mentally holds him back, Railey and Gibson are not near his level.

Edit: I didn't even see the second part of your sentence. Gibson's body is YEARS away from Booker's. Booker is the most cut player on the roster, and he's ~245...

Gibson has a bright future and I'm excited to see him fill out his frame but his offense is far from polished. Railey has size and we'll need that presence but his offensive game is even further behind Percy's. He literally doesn't know he has a left hand yet or what a 'post move' is.

To clarify on the CCL, few bigs play down low. White didn't. Booker didn't. When they did, they dominated, because there's really no one to guard them. Booker hung around the perimeter and made a ton of jumpers and made aggressive moves to the hoop on dribble drives, showing good handle for his size and good finishing ability with either hand. Again, it's a summer league. If he doesn't want to play the 4 at Iowa State when the season comes around, then he won't play as much and he won't reach his potential, an example of something 'mentally' holding him back.

That's pretty much the name of that tune.

I think Percy Gibson could play more than both. Gibson has way more polish on his offensive game in the post than either of those guys, and has the same strong body as Booker.
What game have you been watching??

I was thinking that if Percy works hard and plays tough defense, he could see time in the rotation rebounding and blocking shots. If he showed a learning curve (on the court) similar to Godfrey's last year, it would be a huge bonus.

White and Booker will get the bulk of the minutes at the forward position with Railey, and Ejim playing some SF as well, if Freddy wants to go small. Babb could get some minutes there as well.

I hope you are right that Percy has a more successful college campaign that Booker. Book has already had 2 subpar years under his belt.

And while Percy is no slouch, Anthony was a top 50 recruit in several recruiting rankings and at one point a top 30 guy according to Rivals. His ranking slid after he committed to SIU. Here's to hoping Freddy can get him to play like it!

Booker seems to be overrated to me...which is probably why we haven't heard much about him. He's large and athletic but not really a player. Hopefully I'm wrong...we need depth at that position more than any other.

There is NO way that he starts this year. We have too many good guards/shooters. Babb/Ejim will play the 4. Royce will be the 5...Booker will give him a couple minutes rest here and there.

How in the world have you came to that conclusion?

I apologize I must have missed the interview where Fred said Anthony was not a player. Please post when you get a chance.

If Booker is only getting minutes to give others rest, then he's a recruiting bust/mistake, IMO. Knowing how talented he is my expectations are high.

FYI, We will not start a '5'. Either White or Booker will guard the opposing 5, if they opponent starts one.

I personally think Melvin comes off the bench. I think it would be a HUGE asset having someone of his athleticism and hustle coming in and providing meaningful minutes and not having to worry about getting gassed like we saw last year. He's flexible enough defensively where he can guard a 4 or 3 (or maybe even a 2 in the right situation) and his offensive game should be improved.

We were SUPPOSED to have both Booker and Godfrey this year, but instead we will have Booker and Gibson. IMO, at best this is a wash, but more than likely is a downgrade.

Booker will be Booker, but I'm not confident that Gibson will be as good as Godfrey. The good news is that we've upgraded at most other spots, outside of PG.

We're definately going to have much more talent and depth this year... by FAR. But keeping Godfrey would have been sweet. He was our enforcer. Every team needs this kind of guy. Godfrey mixed it up inside, didn't back down from anyone, and did all the dirty work. Booker and Gibson seem like more polished offensive guys than Godfrey, I just hope they have some nastiness on the defensive end too?

We can't be all glamour and glitz... and no guys that will bang inside and do the nasty work that needs to be done. That's where Godfrey was sweet.

White, Booker, and Ejim will all probably play close to the same minutes.. with White probably getting slightly more. Railey will see some minutes, with Gibson getting the least between the five.

During exhibition games and small non-conference games like Drake and games like Northern Arizona and Kennesaw State then I would agree.

Are you planning on Booker never coming off the court then? Or White never coming off and playing Center when Booker does? Railey will have to play, especially if Ejim plays the three more than the four.

This is why I think it'll be Ejim coming off the bench in most games. Of all the players that we have he is the most versatile. With a starting line up of the following:

McGee
Scotty
Allen
White
Booker

Ejim can come in and spell the 4 with White or Booker sliding over to guard the 5. Babb can come in and spell the SG/SF spot. This will allow Allen to take over ball handling duties to give McGee a rest.

After White or Booker catch their breath they come in and Ejim moves over to the 3. Then Babb can slide over to the 2 and Allen can take over with ball handling duties while McGee/Scotty get a rest.

Now what is nice with this year is the flexibility and depth. So now Ejim, Babb, and Allen need a breather. You can put in McGee, Scotty, and Sledge in. It is like changing lines in hockey.

Gibson will get a few minutes but when Booker comes out I would expect Babb or Ejim to move in and play the 4 spot. When White is out either Gibson will sub in and fill in for a few minutes or Booker could even move in and play the 5 spot. Booker has enough size and is capable of it. I think having Ejim or Babb play the 4 for a few minutes a time instead of having to bring in Railey will still be much more productive.
