Am I the only one troubled

Let's say my neighbor subscribes to the Des Moines Register (obviously a Hawkeye fan). He calls me and tells me about an article that is in the paper and provides me detailed information from the article. Is this unethical? If it is, should I stop? Will the Rag police come after me?

IMO, Cyclone Fanatic should not have to control this. The fact that you pay money to get information and give it away for free diminishes the value of what you paid. Also, eventually CN and CR will not exist and there will not be any info left to pass on because we only need one person to subscribe to each and give it away. I'm sure they can't pay their staff on one subscription.

Excellent post. It brings up a few good points. When you're paying for information, don't you have the right to share it? It's not like you've paid to sit on it and not let others know and spread the good word and make yourself look in the know.

In the world of free enterprise, one would say screw it and steal the information and put the pay sites out of business. But this case is unique. CN and CR provide us not only premium information that the stupid Des Moines Register doesn't pick up, but forums where Cyclone fans can interact with respect and communicate knowledge in an almost unparalleled fashion.

If CF was to put those two sites out of business, we would be doing the fan base as a whole an injustice. We're talking about three high quality sites reporting on the same subject. I can't help but think that these three sites may have to unite and come to some sort of agreement. I can't even begin to think what it would be though, you can't police the trafficking of knowledge.

Most of what I was going to say has already been posted so I will just say that we highly encourage people to keep "premium" info off of the site.

Like Angie and dbronco (and others) stated, there isn't really any way for us to know where info comes from since we ourselves are not on the said site. Paul and I blocked each other's IP addresses long ago so I have no idea what comes from his site or from somebody's "sources". The two problems are really that 1 - people agreed to keep info gathered on other sites to themselves as part of an agreement with said site, and 2 - just because info is posted on said site, doesn't mean people haven't gathered the same info elsewhere (i.e. from friends, players, coaches, etc).

Because of the different ways of obtaining information, I can't do much to enforce things but simply ask everybody to be respectful of where they obtained the information in question. If you are paying for information, you are doing yourself a disservice by posting it elsewhere. Likewise, I can't delete every post because people really do have solid ways of finding out information on their own. I could go on for hours about how easy it can be to get information on recruits by making a few calls or checking with players and friends of the recruits, but I won't. There are just way too many holes for info to leak from for me to try and research every post.

All we can do is ask for people to respect the guidelines and to delete any blatantly "stolen" posts.

I will re-emphasize these two posts in particular as good answers to the "sharing of information issue".....

dbronco7sc:
Jeremy has stated on numerous occasions that nobody should post information that he or she has obtained from a premium site's confidential section. And thus CycloneFanatic does not support this. I am not a member of any premium site on the web... but I will make an educated guess that when purchasing a membership it states in your contract not to share this information with the public and discusses the rules on that. Thus the responsibility falls on the member of the premium site. There is no way of directly enforcing this rule on those people by CycloneFantic anyhow as there is no way the moderating team can have memberships to every single premium site on the web and know everything that is discussed on those millions of websites. However, as I mentioned, CycloneFanatic asks that users do not do this.

Also, just because information is on a premium site, does not mean a person who knows that information obtained it from that site. In regards to Cyclone Athletics in particular, many member of CycloneFanatic are students and friends of players, and many members have connections throughout the community. Also, fans of Iowa State are smart and able to make deductions based off of publicly displayed pictures and publicly displayed descriptions of premium information on the free portions of premium sites.

Again, I will re-emphasize what Jeremy has stated many times. CycloneFanatic.com does not support members of premium sites posting information that they obtained only from the premium portion of those premium sites. If you are sharing this information, please do not continue in this manner.

But I will also state, it is often unfair to people who have other sources of obtaining new information to be accused on a regular basis of stealing information. If you suspect someone is stealing information, please PM the user and ask in a kind manner how they are obtaining their information and if they are posting premium info, to please remove it. You may find they are not doing anything wrong. If you find they are and are not cooperating, please report the post and the moderating team will deal with the situation.

Thank you,
The CycloneFanatic Moderating Team
Angie:

No, I agree completely, SpokaneCY. We try and get in and clean up premium info that is posted when we see it. Unfortunately, we are hampered by the fact that there really is no way to verify if someone has a source or not. As a fellow moderator pointed out once, there are how many people who work in the athletic department? There are then how many other people who are directly related to them? Someone tells their wife, who tells her friend, who tells someone else... It's kind of the six degrees of separation thing.

Please note, however... We REALLY do not encourage, desire, or allow yanking premium info from the other sites. As the forum rules state, this is directly prohibited. Whatever your opinions of the other sites or their administrators may be, please respect the rules here.

Repent ye sinners of unpaid ISU information...actually the info on this site led me to subscribe to a premium site, and I'm enjoying it. Point of it being good advertising is right on. There will always be some leaks etc, but it helps all concerned. I bet this site has sold dozens on rivals and scout...Jeremy should get a cut!

Good points by many here.

I'm still curious though as are a a few other members here..

What does God & Atheism have to do with this?

Or are we starting a debate of what religious denomination Cy hails from? :nerd6bs:

Well... Pollard is God, Alford is the Devil, and Iowa fans are in an endless state of denial (aka purgatory). Other than that, I don't know:no6xn:

This message is in no way a reflection of religious beliefs, it is simply an inappropriate, off-the-cuff joke that will most likely bite me in the arse.

If someone chooses to make there living on the internet then they should figure out a better way to make a living or not complain. It aint called the information super highway for nothing. If you want info, you can get it on the internet.

I stopped paying for the other sites when I discovered this site. Some so called premium site info has filtered in here much to my delight........keep it up. As for respecting this site rules concerning "premium info" it really doesn't matter, I don't subscribe and don't post their stuff.......however it is fun when it gets here........I really enjoy the web links that get posted.
CN and CR will survive, not worry.....there will be enough "paid" subscribers to provide for their existence. I really don't see how the you can police it with every detail be deleted from paid sites.....

You are also the kind of fan, I suppose, who does not pay for football tickets. You instead try to find a free handout from a person who can not use his/hers. This is half the reason that Jamie is in the predicament that he is in. Too many free-riders. The mentality needs to change.

Some people call this putting fans in the stands. You call it freeloading. Tomato/tomato I guess.

I don't understand why when someone posts that a recruit has interest in ISU it has to be stealing from CR. It is not difficult to go to rivals.com, in their free area, and see who has interest with what schools. That's like going to a butcher shop, ordering cow spines and then yelling at the butcher for giving your veal chops. It just don't make sense.

by the apparent free-flow of information between the various sites? I frequent all 3 known Cyclone sites but am curious how others feel about "stealing" info from the one premium site and posting it elsewhere. I realize the info will flow into the public domain in a matter of days, but is it really okay to do it until that happens?

I'm an atheist but I have a strong moral background that looks at this sort of thing as unchristian.

Do you have proof of stealing? If so, what is it? If you don't have proof, how moral is it to accuse others of something for which you have no proof?

Wow...goes to show you the power of organized religion.

An atheist who cannot separate morality from Christianity.

Give us all a break -A little over the top, don't you think. How can anyone prevent someone else from posting info on this site? Whether it be originally gained from a "premium" source or from some where else. Every single piece of info originates from the exact same place and time. How it gets distributed from there is dependant on who becomes privy to this info.

If you pay to obtain info, that is your choice. Don’t blame others who don’t pay and receive similar info. There are more than anyone “sourceâ€￾.

I will never pay for any information. No way any of this information is proprietary.

Wow, being an alum and giving in excess of 1K a year and buying season tickets every year ( I live 1200 miles away) and give them to family.........makes me a freeloader???????? and what predicament is the AD in anyway???????? he is just moving forward with what needs to be done...as for my mentality towards ISU and the program it is just fine with my contributions and ticket purchases each year.....see you at the EIU game!

I pose a question to you, oh great one....

From which does ISU athletics benefit most from, should you need to choose only one to put your money toward?

- Fans paying for premium online memberships.

or

- Fans donating money and buying tickets.

Tough call, unless you know of coaches/recruits that make their decisions based on the number of fans that own premium online memberships.

One of these "premium" sites wasn't too worried about taking my money and not sending the printed paper as promised. Several years ago, but I'm stilled miffed when someone gets on some poor soul for sharing "premium" info.

Let's see, CN and CR are affiliated with scout and rivals, two rather powerful companies. I note they have similar paid sites for all the other Div 1 and more websites. I think they are the ones in competition and will be raiding each other for info. Point of fact, after I mentioned that rivals had 12 commits in free section while scout had 10, the next day scout mysteriously showed 12 and broadcast that they have a new recruit committed listed and we are running out of time to get the good inside stories by 7 Feb if we do not sign up now. I think all three have enough interest to keep going because I think Cyclone fans are pumped up about future winning teams. Again, what premium info has been placed on this website that is not available from the free sectiob? Obviously, someone reporting a tip that is not a premium member will not have access to paid info. Are some people peeved because so much of what the paid sites say is premium pops up the next day in the Rag, on this site, on sports talk shows. IMO, most of the leaks occur from sports talk shows. People email info or callin and within a few minutes it is all across the nation. Jeremy has explained his policy endlessly and people still persist in saying some ogre has slipped in paid premium info. A lot of good comments are made from friends of friends with some juicy info, the same place the paid websites are probably finding it. People complaining about robbing the paid cradle remind me of those Hawkeye fans in some ways. Whine. Whine. Whine. I do not know what more Jeremy can say or do. This is a respectable discussion website.
