Am I Snorting the Hilton Magic Dust?

For the last couple days I have been immersed in Steve Prohm information, videos, interviews, research, background info, game tapes, etc. (Yup, call me a nerd! :smile I've gotta say, I'm really blown away by this guy not as a basketball coach, but as a human being. Incredible character, integrity, ethics, etc. Just an all around amazing guy.

You can tell me if I've been snorting the Hilton magic dust, but my gut has been telling me that if Coach Prohm has success at Iowa State, that he won't be jumping ship to the next big thing. Sure if Coach Cal leaves UK (or Johnson done at Bama), I could see that, but everything I've read, seen, heard, etc. he's all about being in a small town living area where he and his wife can raise his kid(s), be around a tight family kind of atmosphere, have a place that has an incredible fan base and basketball support (Hilton Magic is one of the best in the nation). I feel he's not in it for the money, but more for the happiness, family, and a great basketball institution. Sure, he'll want raises/bonuses for success in the future, but I just don't feel like he's a guy that (if he's successful) that he's going to dump $2/million for $2.5/million salary if he's genuinely happy and they feel like Ames is a great place to raise their family.

I feel like Prohm, if successful, is much more likely to stay for 10+ years than Hoiberg ever was. I distinctly remember several times an interviewer mentioned a long tenured coach, or a coaching record (like Johnny's wins) to Fred and he'd laugh it off and basically say "I have no interest in that".

Of course, the fanboy in me didn't believe him, but between his health, the NBA and just the way he's wired, he was never going to be a "lifer".

Prohm, for all his similarities to Fred, is from an entirely different coaching background. He is a college coach "lifer", or at least as long as he's successful.

He also reminds me a lot of Jay Wright, not just in appearance. Like Prohm, Wright became an assistant coach at a small school right out of college and worked his way up, coaching with a couple of big named coaches and then taking a mid-major job quite equivalent to Murray St. (Hofstra). Wright was the exact same age as Prohm when he got the job at Villanova and has now been there 14 years.

Im afraid people will want him gone before his contract runs out. Im sure isu will do moderately well this year but anything shor of sweet 16 and 2nd place big 12 will be a disappointment. And then next year assuming monte leaves is going to be rough; he better have a stellar recruiting effort or people will be jumping off ledges; hoiberg saw 2016 coming from a mile away and knew it was now or never. I think prohm is over his head but i hold out hope he pulls a rabbit out of his hat.

He's got a ridiculous roster. Go far in the tournament and you'll be able to recruit just fine. 2016-17 might be rough but I think he will have us back near the top of the conference shortly after.
