Altman to Arkansas

Tough year to be looking for a coach. I don't recall it being this bad when we were in the market....

Good year if you are a coach, I think the salaries are going to be high, and there will be a lot of contract re-negotiations because of this. I have a feeling that Iowa will have to pay well above market value for whomever they hire, unless they go the Wayne Morgan route.

Wouldn't it be the funniest thing ever if they wound up hiring the one guy that actually applied for the job from what was it, northwestern state?

I have to admit, I am a little surprised if Altman goes
to Arkansas over Iowa, mainly because of geography.

I disagree. IMO, the media (Keeler) is really making this into something it's not.

Is Iowa hurt by not having a president? You betcha.

However, it's not close to the fiasco we had a few years back.

When we were looking for our football coach, it took some time. No one was saying anything and there were a lot of rumors/speculation floating about. In the end, we did alright.

The situation was entirely different when we hired Chizik from a timing standpoint. When we started looking for our new football coach nearly every football coach in America was still coaching their team...McCarney left during the season. Iowa has been looking after the season's end and there are only a few coaches still coaching (2 right now to be exact). Additionally, probably every candidate they would have any interest in is in Atlanta (probably in the same hotel). Now is the very best time to interview basketball coaches for openings. Maybe they are waiting until tonight's game is over so they can go after Donovan or Matta...JUST KIDDING!!

I do agree that it has not yet hit the low we had when we were forced to hire Morgan. But they have been told "no" in one form or another by several coaches at this point...so it is clearly heading down this path.

I also agree that not having a university president is a negative in the search but the real problem is that the job is just not that good of a job.

The only coach that is know for a fact to have told Iowa no is Pearl and that may have been to appease those fans that really, really wanted him. In my opinion, the "no" coming from Altman, Majerus, Lowry etc are very similar to the "no" we heard from Norvelle, Harbaugh, Brewster.

Not really...lots of great coaches out there. The problem for Iowa is that none of them wants to come to Iowa City!

The UK, Michigan, and Arkansas jobs are all far better than the Iowa job. Additionally, as soon as someone takes these three jobs then the domino effect will begin...if Donovan would leave Florida then that job would be ahead of Iowa in the pecking order as well.

I think the Kent guy from Oregon is the best available to them now.

No way this happens. He is an Oregon Alum. In his 9 or 10 years in Oregon he has totally turned a horrible program around...they have been to the Elite 8 twice in the last few years. He has a far better gig in Eugene!

When I see Altman at the news conference wearing an Arkansas cap, then I will be convinced he is leaving Creighton, not when I read another internet rumor.

I think everyone is waiting to see what Donovan does. It is the key. If he stays, the top job is Kentucky. If he goes, the top job is Florida. So, everyone is sitting tight until his situation is settled. Once this question is answered, every other job will be filled quickly.

I agree totally.

By the way...I used a little Roundup on the weeds in my beds this weekend herbicide!!

Frankly, I'm a little concerned that you had weeds in your bed in the first place. Taking "dirt naps" again Cyclone#1?

ESPN & CBS Sports are now also reporting that Altman is taking the Arkansas Job...

Supposedly some of the big money behind Oregon (Nike?) are not fans of Kent at all and they won't pony up for much-needed new facilities until he is gone but he keeps winning enough that they can't rid of him. It's another situation where he might just say "screw it" and leave for some place where he'll be more appreciated.
