All time TJ team?

Another obvious weakness is ft percentage. Shooting under 70% is inexcusable and mentally weak. Dude. These guys are getting paid to do this. If they can't be bothered to make their free throws there's no excuse, plus the coaches are to blame for letting them get away with it.

Yeah let's trash the thread with stupid takes.

I think some of you guys are underestimating how solid Jaren Holmes was his one year. I haven't seen his name mentioned once.
That's because of his position. There are a wealth of players in his position that are all better than Holmes. It's not so much that he wasn't great in that spot that year; it's just that there are a handful that are better in that spot over the time frame.

He was fine, but Iowa State, this year, has 3 guards as good or better than him.

He was a fine player for a bad offensive team, but not better than any others listed.

I get that and agree, I just thought it was weird his name wasn't even brought up as maybe an honorable mention.

Holmes was good on a team that needed a high usage offensive player. He wasn’t very efficient but he was on an offensively limited team that needed what offense they could get.

BRE was a better 5 man than Ward. Fight me.
I think it depends on the role that you want that position to play. Ward would be incredible on this year's team as the only ask is to defend, rebound and clean up around the hoop.

This is the exact role that Big Rob played! Jones is better on rotations, block outs, and the post. This is supported by the nearly 2 to 1 min share that BRE played over Ward.

I have had a bit more time to think about this question and type up a fuller answer now.

I will interpret the question as putting together the best 13-man scholarship roster that I can plus one or two more spots for walk-ons to give you the full roster for the team.

For reference, these guys won all-Big 12 honors under TJ.

Brockington (1st, Newcomer OTY)
Hunter (Freshman Team, Freshman OTY)
Kalscheur (2nd, Defense Team)
Holmes (Newcomer Team)
Lipsey (Freshman Team, 1st, Defensive Team 2x, 3rd)
Gilbert (2nd, Newcomer Team, 3rd)
Momcilovic (Freshman Team)
C. Jones (1st, Sixth Man OTY)
Jefferson (2nd, Newcomer Team)

STARTING LINEUP
---
Lipsey (the best PG of the TJ era, no argument otherwise, the straw that stirs the drink)
Brockington (won first-team all-Big 12 for a reason, simply a terrific two-way SG)
Momcilovic (no argument whatsoever for taking a shooter this good off the floor)
Jefferson (obviously on an AA campaign right now, easily the best forward of the era)
R. Jones (already litigated, but he's the perfect complementary piece to these four starters)

BENCH
---
Gilbert (the de facto backup PG and quite the two-way SG even if Brockington is slightly better)
C. Jones (thought about starting him but kept him in his preferred Sixth Man role on the bench)
Kalscheur (absolute defensive stopper and underrated on offense during his senior year)
Toure (needed one more guard... ran through Holmes, Heise, Grill, Hunter, and even Batemon, but Toure is the best of the group so far and obviously has room to grow... freakish defender)
T. King (the roster needs another PF or two behind Jefferson, and Tre King was the best of 'em)
Kunc (might not play much with these guys around, but felt like a good locker room guy and depth)
Ward (restores the R. Jones/Ward rotation that worked so well during TJ's best season so far)
Buchanan (might as well have three big men if we're going as deep as 12 here)

WALK-ONS
---
Kelderman (is good enough to earn a scholarship and see some Big 12 minutes in duress)
Hawley (duh)

In Big 12 play, Buchanan is averaging 6 and 5 in 24 minutes and shooting 41% for the FT line. Big Rob averaged 7 and 4 in Big 12 play in 21 mins and shot 44% from the line. And our Big 12 schedule has been fairly weak so far and is really going to ramp up. We will see. But considering Buchanan has another year I expect a nice jump. But as of now they are similar stats wise. Rob was a better defender and Buchanan a better passer.

Buchanan is a better rebounder

Buchanan is a better rebounder
Rob was not a great rebounder for a 5, nor was he a shot blocker. Buchanan is a pretty good rebounder. Not great, but pretty good. But the hard hedge and double-teaming out on the perimeter, or even getting switched onto guards, Rob was really good at it.

While I think he's a windbag, last year Tom Crean was previewing an ISU game and brought up how Rob was missed, and how he was one of the most unsung guys in college basketball the previous year. I don't know how accurate he was, but he was giving Rob credit for essentially being the quarterback of the defense. I seriously have no idea though how our fans would classify Rob as unathletic. What he could do on the perimeter when getting switched on a guard was really impressive.

With NIL I think the 5 position needs to be a moneyball bargain position. These guys with legit size and skill have always been overvalued even in the old HS recruiting environment due to scarcity.

Guys like Ward and Rob were really good pickups by TJ. Same goes for Buchanan, though he's flashed some good offensive skill, particularly as a passer. He seems to get lost a few times on defense, and doesn't quite have the knack or timing for the hard double and getting back like Rob did yet.

Buchanan has a lot of work to do, but by next year I think he can be a very good offensive player.
