All Things Notre Dame

Are you also Creighton, Boston College, or Georgetown fans? I've never understood the 'Catholics are fans of ND' thing. Unless it's just because of the movie.

Notre Dame was the first college team to go "national". This was in the 1920's and 30's. Even today the college team of choice in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago is usually Notre Dame.

A lot of people grew up listening to local teams or Notre Dame on the radio. Same with television. Usually Notre Dame vs whoever. My grandfather and dad would be examples of those who grew up on Notre Dame. My dad also liked ISU though. I grew up around both but am an ISU fan. Don't hate Notre Dame and usually cheer for them, but not this time. :)

Notre Dame's popularity has absolutely nothing to do with Rudy.

Aren't all Iowans that grew up Lutherans huge Luther College fans? o_O I Mean I know I am.....huge...someone tell me what their mascot is......;)
you're forgetting Wartburg.. then again basically everyone else in my family went there so I have spent a lot of time on campus.

My grandma was in elementary school when that happened....
The best part about that is that I was at a conference in South Bend once. We had a tour on the ND campus as an event. A tour of the stadium was a big part of that. An old Notre Dame alum was the tour guide for the stadium tour and he spent about 10 minutes going into great detail of this ND/Iowa game on the tour while we were sitting in the press box.

This was only about 10 years ago.

Rudy is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've always been fascinated with their history and have read several books about their program, players, coaches. I grew up Catholic, but I never considered rooting for them, just found them interesting. George Gipp is one of the most fascinating characters in college football history.

Anyhoo, I imagine our fanbase will give them a little culture shock. Their fans are understandably disappointed, but I think the matchup is interesting to college football fans.

Spent about 2 hours today perusing about 6 ND websites, and was actually impressed by what I read. The usual " I can't believe we are playing ISU crowd"; but actually MANY informative posts that reference our stats, schedule, players, etc., that reinforce this game will not be a pushover! Many ranked us, according to stats, that we will be the 3rd best opponent they played all year. Gotta love well informed posters!!

The game should be a sellout. fyi: The Camping World Bowl only sells seats for the lower Bowl, so that will look weird.

Is this true? Seems odd, particularly as we bring 30k fans. Seems like between us, ND, and the public, they could sell tickets in the upper deck. Capacity with the upper deck is 65,000. Lower deck only must cut it to 40,000 max. This will keep Stub Hub prices high!

Most of the Notre Dame fans I know hate Iowa for what that's worth.

Hate the state of Iowa or the TOE? If TOE, why? I wouldn't think they would pay much attention to them. Perhaps it is a competition for suburban Chicago recruits?

ESPN Prediction:

Camping World Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Iowa State

i
i

(Noon on ABC at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida)

The coaching matchups here are fascinating, as Brian Kelly leads Notre Dame against Iowa State and Matt Campbell, who would be on the short list to succeed Kelly in South Bend. Defensive coordinators Jon Heacock (Iowa State) and Clark Lea (Notre Dame) are both excellent tacticians. Notre Dame's offense is a little more reliable, though, and gets the win behind the Ian Book-Chase Claypool passing connection.

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, Iowa State 23

Hmmm. Different writer than the two who did ESPN's bowl predictions. For the record, between the two, they only got a single Big 12 bowl pick correct (other than OU in the playoff and BU in Sugar). Both picked us to go to the Liberty Bowl. :p
