We're not manhattan or any other pro sport state. We take a large amount if pride in our own doing well.
If Mac was taking all kids from far away places and missing out on some good Iowa kids he'd be getting killed for it.
Fact is you need to bring in some Iowa kids if they are good enough. Key being if they are good enough.

You seriously think anybody cares where the talent comes from if we're dancing every year? I want to win and couldn't care less where the players come from that accomplish that.

and he still couldnt land him....we have some more top notch guys in the state coming out of hs in the next few years too and we really must get them or i will really be unhappy. Even worse would be if iowa's new coach lands them :no:

I NEVER had the feeling that McDermott would be anything like Rhoads. Then the exodus of players began, which should have been the first sign. If McD was truely a good choice, even those guys with over inflated opinions of their own basketball ability would have stayed. But that never had a chance of happening when the newish A.D. decided to prematurely pull the plug on the coach of three seasons and fowling the water for any incoming coach (fowling the water with the players who were on the team at the time AND with the potential recruits). So, though I never had high expectations for McDermott, his problem was made greater by the ill-conceived actions of the athletic director. It was extremely generous of Craig Brackins to not leave the team believing that his participation in this season could help the program pull out of the nose dive and help land H.B. This generosity can probably never be repaid by the coach.
So no, I'm not puzzled by this situation. It was completely predictable in my opinion. So now that my worst fears have been realized, what puzzles me is why the guy who set up this situation isn't taking one for the 'team' that he helped create and announcing that he will be stepping down so that Coach McDermott can prove himself to the new A.D. In that way, he can at least attempt to still the waters of discontent for another year for coach McDermott.

BigBake- If GMac gets an invitation to the NIT next year can I assume you would want him to turn it down? If so, how many do you think would be in your court? I'd guess Hilton would be packed if we did well enough to get an invite, especially after sitting out the post season for so long.

Yes, yes they do. Going dancing and having Iowa talent being apart of that is what makes our program special in some ways.
Winning is everything but winning with some local talent on your squad is something we here love.

Very good point. I felt that way initially too.
Still, I suppose I should have looked harder at the style of play UNI employed, but they were winning so I didn't care as much. Looking back, I think Mac just had some guys at UNI that knew how to play smart on their own (constant cutting, good ball movement, back picks, on-ball picks, flashes and curls around screens, etc.) because they found enough points to win. We have had a dismal pick-and-roll NBA style isolation offense in his time here that has been truly underwhelming and I don't think his system has allowed our players to flourish. I must say I have been surprised with how ineffective his offensive coaching has been.
When we got him I thought we picked up a guy who could win at a tough place where they weren't used to winnning (UNI) and he would do even better at ISU. Boy was I wrong. It is time to say goodbye.

Maybe RonnieBoy should have let McDermott know he wasn't interested in McDermott's ISU team sooner than signing day if he didn't think they would meet his requirements and he had any respect for McD.

McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

I'm going to bring this up for the last time because I'm sure people are getting slightly annoyed I won't drop it, but the extension was painted by Pollard as an automatic extension triggered by the terms of McDermott's contract.
I've read the contract several times and simply have absolutely no idea how that could be the case. By the terms of the contract McDermott should have gotten 1, possibly 2 years worth of automatic extensions, not 3.
I would argue that the contract calls for an extra year for every year in which we're short on scholarships and miss the NCAA tourney.
Communicating with the Associate AD, apparently the Athletic Department, and its counsel interprets the contract differently than I do. It appears that they're claiming that McDermott gets an extra year for every scholarship he was shorted. Although, again, I have no idea how they do so, when even a non-lawyer can read and understand the relevant language.
So McDermott gets an extra three years when he should've gotten 2 at the very most, and more likely just 1. I just feel a little sunshine on this whole ordeal would go a long way. In my opinion, there is certainly some explaining to do.
