Alien: Earth

I've seen some bad takes, but this one is a doozy. Just going to ignore the excellent set design, creature design, atmosphere, suspense, action, and body horror elements of the movies (well the first 2 at least). The first 2 are both top notch examples of sci-fi and horror, and Aliens is also an excellent action movie.

The original Alien followed the same successful formula of Jaws (not sure if it was borrowed or they both got it from the same place) in waiting a long time in the movie before we see the monster and it worked perfectly.

I don't recall any jump scares in the first one...way more build ups and some things we don't see.

To me Prometheus fits beyond my wildest dreams of what we might ever get, I think it's a misjudged masterpiece from an all time great director...but Covenant didn't go where I wanted the next chapter to go so it's a bitter thing. Romulus is a very well made movie and fun if you just go in wanting fun and don't care about recycling of ideas, there is one fun unique action scene. Alien3, Resurrection and the AVP movies...I ignore them pretty easily.

The tricky thing about Alien and maybe Empire Strikes back is they set this bar where it's like these are near perfect works of art but also fun pop cutlure sci fi/action/horror. The more times I watch Alien I have to put it next to 2001 and the Godfather more than sequel Aliens or Terminator or a good Star Wars movie, it's just flawless and the messages are more timely today than in 1979.

A lot of people (not saying you) understandably complain about all the sequels/prequels in big franchises not doing anything original and relying on recycling old ideas and nostalgia...but then also they rage against something impeccably well made like Prometheus not being exactly like the original so what do they want? To me if somebody really hates Romulus and really hates Prometheus they just do not want any sequels/prequels to anything because if both of those are poor quality (one being unique, the other a formula, both looking/sounding amazing) there's nothing that would please.

I liked Prometheus but it fell a little short of my expectations setting the backstory for Alien. It's been a while since I've watched it, but I remember liking it and being disappointed the first time watching.

My biggest gripe with world building in movies is continuity. Keeping things flowing, with a purpose and reason, without introducing concepts and themes that don't match, or worse, contradict what's come before.

This is why I am so impressed by what the MCU did ending with Endgame. They did make unfortunate decisions/mistakes, especially in Phase One, but overall they told a pretty seamless story across 23 movies.

The latest movie "Romulus" wasn't anything ground breaking but it bottled up some of the classic formula in a slick way and came up with a few new special effects/action ideas. If the series does the same it'll be good.

You definitely didn't need much if any back story to enjoy Romulus and I'm sure this will be the same. Easter eggs for hardcore fans but everyone can watch.

I watched the movies in chronological order, not by release order, and that really helps in following how each movie builds off the others.
Absolutely brilliant series of movies- way more than horror, it’s a story of searching for how life began and how life will continue after we are gone.
Prometheus and covenant are must see to understand the rest of the series.

I only watched the first one of the two episode debut, but to me, it seems way too complicated, way too many characters introduced in the first episode and, therefore, way too boring and hard to keep track of who's who. I was tempted to shut it off and delete both episodes, but I somehow struggled through the first one and only fell asleep twice.

I was not very happy with this program. I only watched the first one of the two episode debut, but to me, it seems way too complicated, way too many characters introduced in the first episode and, therefore, way too boring and hard to keep track of who's who. I was tempted to shut it off and delete both episodes, but I somehow struggled through the first one and only fell asleep twice.

Stick with it. Some characters matter more than others and I assume many will get weeded out shortly. My only real beef was some of the pacing.

I really liked it. I watch something most nights before bed. If I'm thinking about it the next morning it means there's something to it...then other times I can barely remember what I watched. I was thinking about this one.

It's going to be a challenge to have a long series of this IP so I expect ups and downs but I like the gaps they are filling in that the best movies in the franchise have already set up.

Only watched first episode so far.

If Episode 1 had an Alien/Prometheus vibe, Episode 2 is defintely the Aliens action/horror vibe.

I'm not really sure you could make Alien/Aliens action much better for a streaming series than episode 2, like I'm sure it could be a little better but I doubt it could be dramatically better than that.

I did watch Romulus on a plane a few months ago and liked it.

We both looked at each other when they transferred Wendy and thought, wasn't the purpose to prove the tech of the transfer? Why make the synthetic super strong and make a small army of them? Seems like a decision that will bite the Timothee Chalema wannabe in the butt.

Have some theories on this I want to wait for more people to see before I delve into it. On the surface it seems dumb to use the age group they chose for this purpose, but I think there is more to be revealed.

Here's my chronological order if you ignore AVP movies and Resurrection as I suggest:

1. Prometheus (2012)
2. Alien: Covenant (2017)
3. Alien: Earth (2025) (supposedly a couple years before 1979 Alien)
4. Alien (1979
5. Alien: Romulus (2024)
6. Aliens (1986)
7. Alien 3 (1992)

IMHO it's a very underrated big franchise if you watch it this way or in any order but just these movies.

Some people think Alien 3 is actulaly really good if you watch "Assembly Cut" closer to director's vision, it's on some recent bluray and streaming options. Others think it's not good either way. It's not a terrible movie and David Fincher knew how to make a cool looking movie at the time, it gave us one of the most iconic images/scenes of the franchise:

People can and will disagree but I think Alien (and predator) has been the best big movie franchise lately with the least duds.

I’m counting days for this.

The lore of Prometheus is solid. But the movie itself was a snooze. That may be harsh and unfair. Perhaps my real issue with Prometheus is that to this day, that is still the best trailer ever made! Such a let down compared to the trailer.

We've watched the first two now. I like it and I think they can take it in a lot of interesting directions. My wife still isn't sold (even though she was the one that wanted to add it to our list), but she is slow to warm up to new shows sometimes.

Just finished Aliens. Not gonna lie I think it’s better than Alien, but I’m thinking of watching these with my son who likes horror. You still have to start with Alien just because of the iconic chest burster scene.
