There's a big difference between being "willing and able to provide neccessary medical care" and being able to afford/wanting to spend $3500 for a dog's ACL surgery.

People like you amaze me. If you have never owned a dog I guess I can understand the comment. If you have, I feel sorry for you.
Our recent experience: Our 3yo lab started limping just like your dog. Our vet said nearly the same thing, probably an acl. She referred us to a vet in another part of town (damn near Mexico) who “isn’t board certified but he’s been doing the procedure longer than anybody else in the areaâ€. The whole uncertified thing worried me but we took her advice. Turns out he is just an old timer who refuses to go through testing for a procedure he could teach to the certifiers. He takes care of all the San Diego Police dogs and put many of them back to work. We are two weeks post-surgery and our dog is chomping at the bit to get back to playing fetch. Moral of the story: listen to the advice of people who have used the vet. Certification has its place but lack of certification may not be an absolute disqualifier.
I am a small animal veterinarian. Depends on the size of your golden doodle. Over 60 lbs, probably recommend TPLO. I have Dr. Merkley do them for me, and would be less that what ISU quoted you. I've always had a German shepherd for a dog. They always stay outside and a free to do as they please. We let her in when ever it's cold to sit on the rug at the front door. I love my dog, but if you think I'm going to spend 3500 dollars or a 1000 dollars for that matter you mistaken. Someone accidentally backed over my dog a couple of years ago and broke her back two legs. It was around a grand to fix it so we put her down. When you grow up on a farm that's how things go.
And people like him and me feel sorry for dog lovers' wallets :wideeyed:. It's hard for me understand people who personify animals. Treat your dog well, sure. Give him heartworm medication, get him/her spayed or neutered. Give him a $3500 surgery so he can walk a little better? Sorry, won't do it. Spending any amount of money to extend an animal's life well beyond what is natural? That is animal cruelty in my opinion. If a dog can't get up and move around it isn't a dog anymore. Let it die gracefully while it can still be called a dog. To me, that is the point of a dog, to run around and chase squirrells and chew on bones. Let a dog be a dog, it is not a human.
That said, of course my gf is a huge dog lover and I probably will be the one to shell out for some surgery she keeps telling me her dog will eventually need so take what I say with a grain of salt.
And your point is?
I work for my money and if I choose to spend it on my dog that's my choice. Just like it is your choice to spend your hard earned money on internet porn or whatever.
