MLB: ***2026 MLB Season Thread***

Hate to give the Dodgers credit, but they made the plays at the end and got the big hits when they had too. Toronto has to feel they let this one slip away. A long fly ball is all they needed to win the game and just never could come through in the clutch.

MLB needs a hard salary cap and floor, to even it up a little, but we all know that is never going to happen,

Their fielding was outstanding late in the game. Like you said, they made the plays.

TV will prevent a hard salary cap.

Ya Ohtani is the best baseball player in 100 years. He is a great hitter and a great pitcher at the same time. Can he do both in the same game for very long? The World Series is 7 games that is most rules are out the window. We saw a couple play that could hardly walk. And starting pitchers turn into relievers.
But , and I do not know any details there are a couple rules just for Ohtani. He was allowed more time to get to the mound and be ready to pitch. The big one , he has the largest contract in baseball and ALOT of it is paid after he is out of baseball. So a lot of his pay check is outside the level that MLB charges a tax on teams if their yearly payroll is above a certain number. Someone correct my comments because I am not sure on the detailed.
The Dodgers don't really save any luxury tax on the deal, they pay based on a value set by the CBA, it's like $48m per year for Ohtani. They do only have to pay him $2m per year though which means they get to sign other talent and win championships.

Edit: this article explains it, but it's complicated https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023...ract-structure-is-not-a-luxury-tax-dodge.html

My solution that would "fix" the problems with the current CBA.

1) Deferels are fine, but should only be used in times to financially assist ownership with long-term consequences. The luxury tax will not go lower than length of contract AAV, and will be reflected post-contract during deferel period.

For example, Shohei's ridiculous contract would be reflected as this:
First 10 years - $70M counts towards tax (as opposed to $46M right now)
10 years of deferment - $68M counts towards tax (as opposed to $46M during this time)

2) Penalties for going over the tax need to go beyond finances.
Tier I violation = loss of 3rd round pick.
Tier II = loss 2nd round.
Tier III = loss of 1st round.

Each year over the tax leads to added draft picks lost

As a Cubs fan that Rojas bomb brought back bad memories of Raj Davis or whoever that scrub was that hit the bomb off Chapman. The worst hitter in the game comes through in the biggest moment.

Luckily the Cubs were able to regain their composure, Toronto was not.

I would like to see them go to a system where they took the average of the AAV over the length of the contract and that is their tax number. You sign a player for 5 years at $250 million then your AAV number is $50 million a year towards the cap for 5 years. You want to defer payment out for 10 years, that is between you and the player, but you do not receive cap relief by doing so.

Do like the idea of taking draft picks away for going over the cap.
The Dodgers have come up with a way to game the system, that needs to be taken away, and a hard cap instituted.
