***2026 Minnesota Vikings***

Is it not possible that Darold says, "I like it here, I like KOK, I like JJ18, and $35M per year for 3 years with much guaranteed will be sufficient to make me happy and give us the best chance at championships? "

I mean the guy is playing well, but does one very good season definitively command a long term top 5 qb position salary?

Depends on what he's looking for. For a guy like Darnold, who has seen what being on a bad team and a bad organization looks like, the prospect of playing for a team with all of the pieces for less might be more appealing than getting top dollar from a team with out as good of a supporting cast. But he might be confident in his ability to elevate, and will go where he'll get paid. Neither position is necessarily wrong

Franchise QB tag would make around $42 million. All of it a cap hit
Right, but they are in a good position to either take that hit or if they want to sign Darnold longer, they might be able to front-load it due to cap space and deal with other contracts in the next couple years after.

I'm not sure what makes the most sense. I suppose it pretty much all hinges on their comfort with McCarthy and what other signings/extensions they hope to pull off in the next couple of years.

Around $40m/yr seems like the number that both the Darnold and the Vikings could be comfortable with.

There's definitely a lot of room in the middle between the current Vikings vs. the Jets and Panthers when he was there.

Based on his experience I'm sure there are probably a few organizations he'll probably view as a "no" regardless of how much they pay. But he still might be confident enough he can take an organization that seems to be well-run but isn't quite that of the Vikes for more money.

The QB market could swing pretty wildly depending on if guys like Rodgers and Stafford retire. If both decide to play next year, you might have more leverage as a team. If both retire next year, then the QB probably has more leverage. The Rams and Stafford would be the big impact decision in my opinion. Not sure if Stafford has made a decision yet, but if he retires, that would be a position any FA QB would be falling all over themselves to get to, much like Minnesota should be.

Other than the Rams, I don't see any landing spots that are close in terms of coaching, front office, and surrounding roster that will rival the Vikings for a QB FA. Maybe the team that lands Ben Johnson as HC will be attractive, but mostly the teams that are looking for QBs are a mess.

No one likes to say it, but the reason Brady won 6 super bowls had more to do with his cap hit than his actual talent. He continually took team friendly deals to make sure he had a supporting cast that could win. A guy like Darnold at $35 mil is a better situation than anyone not named Maholmes or Allen making north of $50 mil a year.

Still think you have to do something with JJM given his draft capital. Darnold gets offered another cheap one year deal...let him walk if he wants. If he does, bring up Daniel Jones for next season until JJM is ready for the field. Keep using cap money to shore up the rest of the roster around them.

Adding another FA QB is an option, but what do you get for a $10 to $15 million QB this offseason?

Half joking, but Cousins should be super cheap bridge QB.

Is holding on to both not an option? I get that moving a rookie through slowly is no longer common, but why not see if Darnold would take 2-3 year contract and give McCarthy some time to learn. I get that it eats into the cheap contract time line, but I still believe it's the best way to bring a young QB up.

Possibilities 1) sign Darnold to reasonable 30 to 35m per year contract for 3 years 2) sign Jones to $10 - $20m one year contract 3) roll with JJ and sign 2 back ups one a veteran and one younger and athletic.

Or tag Darnold and revisit for 2026.
