Silage sorghum is interesting but it's a b*tch to get dry enough to make silage in my limited experiences with it. Guy I knew was blending it with corn silage and it worked out well.

Easter is a little earlier. Has been a good indicator of early and late springs.Getting ready for calves to come in a month or so. Getting equipment prepped and out of the shop. Yesterday was 70 outside so I trimmed all the shrubs and did a little yardwork here and there. Feels like it will be an early spring.
Removed pasture fence of hedge posts, no frost in the ground yesterday. Excavator and dozer been working for the past week on conservation projects. No frost and limited moisture in the ground. NH3 and dry fertilizer being applied. Burn bans and grass fires are a problem. Haven't hayed cows since the cold spell in January, cornstalks are open and the cows are in good shape. Sold 5 pot loads of 8 weight heifers, replacements will be a challenge. Like everybody else we will plant our normal acreage this spring but the economics are not exciting.
I am taking a few crop acres and returning them to permanent pasture. Trying to add some replacements and build up my herd at the same time. It's in the area. Not unusual to get a spell of warm weather in February but this is a much longer extended period. My neighbor who is 92 told me in 1954 when he was a freshman at ISU that they plowed every month from Fall to Spring. Have no idea what kind of year for production they had in 1954.
That is one long and cold tip. The Mrs. Would not be happy.50864?
