2025 Wrestle Offs

Can someone please provide some details for me? What was the score, scoring sequences, time, moves used, etc. Thanks
Riggins ran the corner got his 3 and locked up a cradle, Helgeson fought it off for a while but that's all there was to it.

Is someone in the room gonna beat Evan for 133? The answer is no, let him work down to weight comfortably. No reason to be down at wrestle offs if there isn’t anyone that could take his spot.
I wondered why they wouldn't have had him wrestle off at 141. Since he didn't, I would have to think he is either not 100% healthy and/or is very close to down to 133. Does he have any health issues right now?

Some great matches today. Just kind of random thoughts.
  • Grice seemed pretty disappointing, similar to how I felt about him last year when he lost to Meza. 133 continues to look like a potential hole in the lineup.
  • 149 was a little surprising to me, but they're both great wrestlers. Hard for me to have confidence in Johnson after the NCAA's we have seen from him. Also hard to argue with the fact that he probably has more upside than Frost, but consistency also needs to be taken into account.
  • Euton looks like he's the guy, despite the close match I continue to think Euton is going to be significantly better than Riggins at that weight.
  • Gaitan inspired about as much confidence as Grice at this point. I feel like Powe winning would have told us more information, but Gaitan coming from behind and squeaking one out is hard to read much into.
  • Thought Tate looked really good against the #8 guy in the country, have to think he will be a great option next year.
Super fun event, love that we do this.
125 - Castillo looked very solid in all positions. He will definitely be fun to watch in the future.
133 - I was impressed with Pearson. Very mat savvy for a freshman!
149 - Went about as expected. I thought Frost would take it when it went to OT, but Paniro wrestled well. Will be an interesting battle to watch all season. Paniro may have the higher ceiling, but probably a much lower floor when compared to AA Frost.
157 - I think this was a clash of styles so I didn't learn a whole lot.
165 - Euton couldn't keep Riggins off his legs. I don't know how Riggins wins some of those positions when he is completely stretched out, but he somehow manages. Looking forward to Euton getting more mat time and comfortable working back from the knee injury. He can be real good!
174 - Gaitan did Gaitan things. Thought Powe looked gassed early.
184 - Tate battled hard and Dean didn't do much. Tough to learn much from the match.
197 - If Tate doesn't move up, this will be a big hole when Elam sits. Carter looks the part, but just doesn't seem like he would be real competitive against better competition. Where's Floyd?
285 - Yonger looked smaller than last few years, but made it look easy. Surprised how big Hagarty is. Looked much bigger than Yonger.

Thank you for the details! Sounds like a short match. I'm excited to see Helgeson progress. I was impressed by him in high school. I'm hoping he can be another Frost type development story.

I think your are referring to the younger and heavier Helgeson….Jacob at 174 this year. Owen is a year older but not quite as decorated coming out of high school.

Is it as easy as, "this is eschmendia's last year and he is our guy at 141." If not, why would we not cut AE loose to wrestle somewhere else this year?

I’m not following. AE is a National Champ threat so why are we cutting him?
I think some are still trying to wrap their minds about EF not starting the season right out of the shoot at 133. I think you explained it perfectly in post #153.

Granted…I’m a few bourbons in, so maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.

What bourbon you drinking?

I’m not giving up hope that Grice can be a top 15 type of guy.

Think people are writing him off early because of that wrestle off and that’s silly.

I don't think it has anything to do with a wrestle off. There's nothing in his history that says he's a top 15 level guy.

Thanks for all the discussion about the wrestle offs. Busy time of year. Count me in the boat that says not to push the guys hard to get out there for the Iowa dual. A win would be great for so many reasons but it isn't the prize. Not even close. Far more important to be on top of their game come March!

Not sure we've seen anything out of him in March, or high profile matches for that matter, that say he has a higher ceiling

Paniro is one of the top guys when he doesn't shell up it's just unfortunate that he hasn't proven he is capable of getting out of his own way when it matters the most.

I’d rather have a grinder that’s beating everyone he should plus some he shouldn’t than someone that you need to almost flip a coin with against almost anyone.

Certainly Paniro is talented but I’ve seen the movie over and over and it’s not a good one. Consistency of habits is at a premium in college wrestling in all things. It can make the difference in close matches.
