2025 Wrestle Offs

The 25/33 situation is weird to me.

1. Why not let Castillo compete? He looks better than Perryman or Meza. I get he’s smaller, but if he’s the best, he’s the best. Why not even see?

2. Meza seems like he’d have a great shot at 133. Maybe 125 is his best weight, size wise, but if he beat Grice 8-1 in last years’ wrestle off.

3. Frost weight mismanagement. Again?
On this note, what's up with Poulin? Is he injured? If so I have to think there's a good chance we see Castillo use one of his dates against Iowa, assuming he beats Meza which seems likely.

Meza did beat Grice last year but also lost to him 4-1.

I also feel strange about the 125 situation and Meza. Obviously the coaches know what they are doing, but you’d think he would try for 133.

I do wonder if there is something going on at 125.

Maybe I missed it but is Poulin on pitch count also with meza getting the nod whenever Poulin is out?

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. I agree with all you say, except the 'upside' comment. Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean...if PJ would 'let it go' we all think he'd be right at the top, but we've seen this movie before. I think Jacob has more 'upside', but I think he will have a very hard time beating PJ. I think this spot is up in the air through much of the season.

I'm very concerned here also.
There’s plenty of chances to put the pressure on both of them. If PJ beats frost again then he gets the job against Iowa and the cliff keen classic. If he underperforms his ranking then you get Frost in there and see how he does. PJ can’t expect to keep the job if let’s say he loses at Iowa under pressure or does not place top 3 at the cliff keen. How much grace do you give him?

Lot's of interesting thoughts being shared here. I love that the season is about to kick off!

Here are some of my wonderings (no insider info here)

125 - Maybe Poulin has a weight cut similar to E Frost... That could be why he didn't wrestle off? Castilla should redshirt if Poulin is healthy and ready... I do want to see Castilla vs Meza at some point since Meza has made the decision to try for 125.

133 - Some are saying it was the weight cut towards the end of year that got E Frost. However IIRC he was looking really tough towards the end of the season and then hurt his leg. Maybe the injury was because of cutting weight however that's hard to say and even harder to claim it's weight mismanagement. Side note: I'm excited to see Carter Pearson be competitive with Grice right out of the gate. I'm not sure I expected that but I do think that kid can make huge strides during his career.

141 - AE is the front runner here (no surprise - unless EFrost decides to move up and challenge for this spot)

149 - PJ vs JFrost - This is like choosing between two of my kids. Both very different yet both very dedicated to the Cyclones... Both also very capable (and deserving). Some think that PJ should wrestle more wide open... I'm of the opinion that he might be better wrestling tight and just re-attacking. His lungs are in question in most of his losses (which is not the case for JFrost). I think both guys are going to improve from this inter-squad challenge to become the front runner. JFrost has shown to ability to continue to improve so I'm not ruling him out.

165 - Some of you guys are pretty hard on Aiden (JV shot?). He brought it last year when we needed him the most. However, I'm excited to see Euton get a year in without any injury... I think we have two AA caliber guys here. Can someone give me a Riggins vs J Helgeson recap before the pin? Was Aiden dominating or was it a one move and over type thing? TIA

174 - MJ I don't want him to totally take away his big risk moves... sometime the great ones can evolve from being different. I'm hoping he continues to evolve into a great one.

I’m hoping Frost can get the weight down before CyHawk otherwise the hawks may score some bonus points at 133.

I believe Riggins pinned Owen Helgeson and I don’t think it was close prior to that.

Other than SVN, would you pick PJ to go for ISU vs anyone else in the 149 field? I think that’s where I’m at. PJ can beat SVN but Frost is simply more reliable against everyone else in the field, IMO. Such a goofy thing to say about someone who’s been the NCAA #5 seed twice.

Sundays match was just an exhibition match. Poulin is the starting guy so it’s Poulin, meza, then I’d assume Perryman while Castillo redshirts.

Not sure what is wrong with Poulin but it’s not a weight issue. They have been trying to put weight on him since he got here. Castillo can do both. He can RS and wrestle varsity if needed this year.

Hopefully E Frost can make 33 for CyHawk in a MONTH. Plus wrestle healthy by that time that low. Bit worried about him missing wrestle offs.

If the coaches and Evan knew how hard this cut was going to be this year why weren't they on top of it a while ago. It shouldn't be a problem right before season starts
Yep. Should've been taken of way before start of the season. He'll get there. He's tough.

Do you have any idea how hard it is for a 22yo college kid to maintain 133 pounds year round? His identical twin is two weights higher. Season has not even begun yet. As long as he is comfortable at 133 in March/April, I'm good. That said, I am concerned it may not all play out like we hope.

D1 wrestling is hard. Those are sacrifices you expect a team leader and All American to make.

Its obviously really hard thats why i expect our coaching staff and a leader of this team to know that and get ahead of it in the summer.

I always figured The offseason was for training and getting better rather then torturing yourself to get to the right weight immediately. If he’s not ready for Iowa I’ll agree with you.

I think being overly critical on Evan for not being on weight now is just silly. You can complain if you want, but reality is he’s being asked to pull a massive cut for the team and he’s working his way there. Dude is a stud and a team leader regardless here.
I agree but both things can be true.

Evan is a stud/warrior and cutting for the better of the team, but it does seem like he’s not down to where the coaches want him to be just yet (even if it’s not all the way to 33 just yet).

Is someone in the room gonna beat Evan for 133? The answer is no, let him work down to weight comfortably. No reason to be down at wrestle offs if there isn’t anyone that could take his spot.

For me this is part of the problem, he's being asked to do a massive cut (probably even more difficult than last year) and last year was not a good indicator that he's going to be super successful doing it. I don't think anyone saying this is knocking Frost, I'm just disappointed that our best option is someone doing a massive cut that obviously has negatively impacted them in the past performance wise. If he's truly the best option then I hope he's able to figure it out this year.
