2025 Wrestle Offs

For me this is part of the problem, he's being asked to do a massive cut (probably even more difficult than last year) and last year was not a good indicator that he's going to be super successful doing it. I don't think anyone saying this is knocking Frost, I'm just disappointed that our best option is someone doing a massive cut that obviously has negatively impacted them in the past performance wise. If he's truly the best option then I hope he's able to figure it out this year.
What's the other choice?

I’m not giving up hope that Grice can be a top 15 type of guy.

Think people are writing him off early because of that wrestle off and that’s silly.

I think being overly critical on Evan for not being on weight now is just silly. You can complain if you want, but reality is he’s being asked to pull a massive cut for the team and he’s working his way there. Dude is a stud and a team leader regardless here.

I love Evan Frost. Great kid, tough as nails, and I’m very happy he’s a cyclone. But, he shouldn’t be having this issue. If he can get his weight manageable by January/February, he could have done it by November. He just made choices that didn’t allow him to do that. We can love and respect the guy, while also acknowledging this.

Speaking of 125, what happened to the Michigan transfer and why wasn’t he wrestling off?

You could also acknowledge that college age young men are still developing. We know it was a hard cut for him last year and young people typically grow rather than shrink. As mentioned before, his identical twin is two weights higher. He went up a weight this year, why isn't he back at 141? Did you complain when David couldn't make 157 anymore? Respect that he is giving it a shot rather than simply going 141 and shooting it out with AE.

Weights were not scratch Sunday either. They were wrestling on a 2 lb allowance similar to Saturday of NCAA's. Regardless, I trust Evan and this coaching staff.

Matt McDonough had a huge cut and his strategy was to maintain close to weight year round . I think it was a good strategy.

The other choice is to take care of gaps in the portal. Nothing to to be done for it now.
How exactly would the portal have solved for EF going 141 instead of 133? With our returning roster, EF at 133 and AE at 141 represents our best lineup, no? We are already going to have one AA type guy sitting in March. If EF doesn’t move down to 133, we’d have two.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Are you sure…the rumor was he was over 160 in the summer the last couple of years.

There was a lot of moving parts this spring/summer so I’m Evan’s focused on training and improving not worry about which weight he was going.

Ortega was a serious option at 133 and sorry but every coach/wrestler will tell you he is the #1 or #2 P4P wrestler (Carr is the other) in the room regardless of style. He is still a potential option but the courts are dragging their feet is the last I heard. Who knows maybe we will get an update Thursday evening.

Then there is AE at 141 but was coming off major infection issue and it wasn’t known for sure if he would be a go this year.

All I’m saying is it wasn’t the coaches deciding what weight he should go as they always leave it up to the wrestler. Yes, they may recommend/encourage a weight they should go but the final decision is the wrestlers. Evan may not had decided to go 133 until mid-summer.

If healthy, I’m sure he will be on the mat for Iowa and ready to go.

Not sure "couldn't make 157" is accurate. No inside knowledge but I assumed wanting to grow into 74 KG was the bigger concern after Carr wasn't close to making the world team after winning a title at 157. Anyway I trust the coaching staff and if frost is the plan at 33 then great.

his last year he went off the diet he was on for awhile - had some doubts but was not that heavy - So I’ll change it to all but maybe his last year .

I’m saying if Evan was going to have this tough of a time getting to 133, which should have been apparent from last year then we should have found a 133. Now maybe grice turns out to be good or Evan gets it together. But you optimize for the team not around Evan having a spot.

Ortega getting eligibility would certainly be welcome but seems like we are quickly running out of time for that determination to happen.
