Hard to know what's available that ISU can afford.

Ten days remain in portal period.

I was going to compare timeline with previous years and who we got "late," but this season's portal period is only 30 days, last year it was 45. So can't really do that as apples-to-apples.

But just for kicks, notable players signed after April 12:
* Curtis Jones, April 17, 2023
* Joshua Jefferson, April 23, 2024

Further back, ISU got Brockington in May, but I assume deadline/rules have changed quite a bit since '21 AND it was pre-NIL.

Edit, with notification from @clone96cr - deadline is for entry into portal, signing period may extend beyond that.

The problem is we lost Gilbert and Jones without replacement unless it's by committee. Then the problem is TJ only usually goes 8 deep leaving who to cover those points?
Milan and Lipsey are better not being #1 options on offense.
Unless we somehow land another shooter/scorer or Williams combined with Bateman can be a big surprise, our best plan for next year will be to slow the tempo and muck it up on defense.

Understand the concern, we lost players who scored about 44ppg in Big 12 contests, so that's a lot of scoring to replace. With 29.5ppg from Curtis/Keshon and the other 11.5ppg from Dishon/Brandton.

IMO between Buchanon & Mulder they should replace the scoring from Dishon/Brandton.

We return 4 guys who scored around 40ppg in Big12 play. The reality is those guys will need to increase their production big time, around 15ppg. I don't think that is unrealistic:
  • Jefferson: 13.5ppg to 18ppg (+4.5)
  • Momcilovic:10.5ppg to 15ppg (+4.5)
  • Lipsey: 10.9ppg to 13ppg (+2)
  • Heise: 4.6ppg to 10ppg (+5)
That's about 68 points between those 4 guys and the 2 post guys. If we can get about a dozen points a game from Williams & the recruits- that's 80ppg. IMO the talent is there, but it means our two big dogs Jefferson & Momcilovic will need to get focused this offseason working on their bodies and games.

Plus, if we can get our elite D mojo back, maybe we don't need to score as much in 2025/26.

Were better. People always neglect to recognize the growth in players that allow them to take the next step and be the guy. I've seen that growth in Jefferson, Lipsey and Momcilovic. That's a strong start.
People need to realize we arent going to have a loaded roster with zero question marks entering every season. It isnt realistic.

In 2023/2024 we got a 2 seed. Who were known commodaties entering that season? 1.) We all saw the promise in Lipsey but lets be honest as a freshman he couldnt shoot the ball from 10 feet out and at times was a liability on offense. He IMPROVED drastically. 2.) Rob Jones coming off his junior year was hardly anything to write home about. He IMPROVED drastically. 3.) Ward hardly played as a junior and many were surprised he returned for his senior year. He IMPROVED drastically. 4.) Tre King was a nice player. Hardly what a would define as an elite player. He IMPROVED.

Now compare that to our four main returning players this year. Lipsey, Jefferson, Momcilovic and Heise. You have three household names that would start ANYWHERE in the country. Heise needs to pick up where he left off. The hope is all four of them IMPROVE and are better players entering next season.

What I am trying to say here is we are in FAR better shape entering 2025/2026 than we were entering 2023/2024. 3 or 4 of the newcomers will need to step up and be steady contributors at the Big 12 level no doubt about it. I trust TJ and staff found the right players to do just that. Their track record with under the radar transfers is incredible.

Still an all- conference player. No matter how you cut it, that guy isn't on our team yet. Maybe one of the freshman. But would be very optimistic to say it would be next year
Sure, but from January to the end of the season, in the games he played, he averaged around 10 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3 rpg, 2 steals (including an 8 steal game against BYU) and 4.3 tov. Prior to January, he averaged 14, 4.2, 4.1 and 2 and 2.5 in a little over a year plus. He also played in 8 less games this year compared to the year prior, and DNP’d 4 out of the last 7. The numbers by themselves aren’t bad numbers (other than the tov), but surely not “all-conference”.

All I’m saying is while we do lose Curtis and Keshon, the Keshon we lost was a shell of who he was last season and very early this season.

You need to realize what people are lamenting is the opportunity cost- the fact that this is when a program would have been taking the next step just a couple years ago.

Now, due to being middle of P5 in player compensation, there’s not much building on the success of the last couple years. Instead, it’s hopefully doing it like before, with filling holes with unheralded transfers and freshmen

On the other hand, some programs are climbing in hierarchy because they can buy more proven players in the portal

I think everyone is underestimating how much production is leaving college basketball this year. In the Big 12, only 7 (could be less) of the 20 All-Conference players are retuning and we return 2 in Lipsey and Jefferson.

We replace Gilbert/Jones with Lipsey/Jefferson and backfill with transfers and freshmen.

What do you mean replace? They were on the team last year (Lipsey/Jefferson)

You’re talking about replacing Gilbert/Jones with transfers and freshmen when Lipsey/Jefferson are on the team, two guys who can replace their production.

Then you can backfill Lipsey/Jefferson with guys like Momcilovic, Heise, Williams, Batemon etc.

You guys think we will get any more transfers? I feel like this could be our final roster and I still feel some uncertainty about this team I think otz will straighten the team out but man we need another veteran guard to help out lipsey and Williams

I want to see Jefferson with a more Royce white type role this year. Hoping lipsey stays healthy for once and really looks to score more this year. We need momcelevic to stay healthy as well and not take nights off and even become more of a scorer. If those three take big strides to how good they already are then I think we are in great shape if we fill in a few of the roles we lost. Loved Gilbert but we might be 5 turnovers less a game without him.

Portal close means new players can’t enter. You can sign with teams long after it closes if you are already in it, if that is your question about Brock’s signing.

I think if we ever needed to hit on our freshmen class, this would be the year.
