I certainly paused when he said that. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a good thing or not.
My hopeful interpretation is it’s a good thing. If we have Tamin, MM, and the presidents to build around, along with role players Heise, etc, then we go get say 2 meaningful players in the portal - and push the chips to the middle of the table next year.

You also have TJ, Green, etc. to build around. He's proven that we can compete with high consistency.

I think we need 9 guys who we can play without drop off to raise our ceiling, so hopefully they can keep everyone that they want to keep and pick up 2-3 impact transfers (leaving 1-2 freshmen or other returners to fill out the rotation).

This NIL stuff is gonna go so far off the rails this off-season. Out of control.

When this all started there was so much talk of this leveling off after a year or two. There has been ridiculous spending on college athletics for decades, its not going to stop.

Until they come up with some sort of salary cap or contracts that keep a player at a school for two years.

I think it neither good or bad, it's reality. Every player is a free agent, so we have pure capitalism in place. The market will determine a kids value and sometimes that market will be unrealistic based on a kids NCAA Tournament play.

I hope we can keep 100% of our returning core, but that is probably unrealistic. Maybe some guys will get crazy offers and maybe some guys feel they are worth more than the staff does. And maybe the staff is looking for a different type of player at a position.

I had to type it out to see for myself. I can't see any of the 4 I put in "returning starters" to transfer and I can't see Nate Heise transferring again. The rest is who knows. Based on BBlum's comment that the portal will be very active, I'm guessing we have 3 or more guys transfer out.

Hope we do everything we can to retain the starters + Heise, because that is enough to make us a dangerous team again, and really dangerous if we pick up two good transfers or a couple of the freshmen make an impact

Iowa will get stupid with NIL this spring as soon as they sign a new coach and will try to make a big splash, just watch.
I have my doubts they have the funds to spend.
DeVries wouldn't go to IC due to concerns with what the NIL commitment they presented him and he supposedly was the coach the donors were willing to spend for... They are less likely to commit money to a different coach who they don't know.

Starting from the bottom........Watson will be a senior. Can't see him transferring now.
Fish would be one that could. Although his brother also goes to ISU and where one goes, so does the other. I think his brother really likes it here.

Rock is a good candidate to transfer. Don't see him really being effective at this level, and has plenty of eligibility to play somewhere else.
Kelderman is going nowhere. Walk on anyway.
Nojus, like Rock I think would be one to watch.

Heise along with the 4 starters I doubt are going anywhere.

My guess is all 4 newcomers make it on campus.

So in this order:

Rock
Nojus
Fish
Watson

Those would be the 4 I can see not here next season.

I think Fish was headed to UNI last offseason but we offered him his spot back. Could see Rock and Fish both going there honestly. They’d be good MVC players

Seems like this fantasy free agency stuff, while fun, is true fantasy. We probably have enough money to keep like our best 3 guys, and then some left over for 2-3 transfers from mid majors.

If only this were next year, in which NIL had to be FMV or at least sleeved through donations to the AD, and competing with football internally
