I'd be happy if Nojus fills Nate Heise's role next year- complimentary scorer and jump shooter off the bench. But he may have a long ways to go from a defend and rebound standpoint vs. Heise.

Momcilovic is the guy I will be most interested in this off-season. Obviously, I hope he stays- but you never know what kids are thinking or the money that some team might pony up. But it seems to me that TJ likes a 3 guard lineup and Momcilovic's role with ISU in 2025/26 might be more of a 4 than 3. If that's the case, he needs to work on his body and mid-range scoring in the off-season.

Gotta believe TJ's two priorities in the portal will be scoring guard and above the rim post whose strengths are rebounding & rim protection.

If we’re lucky enough to retain Milan, we’ll be paying him like he’s our go-to scorer and creator

We’ll need him to make the step up into that role. He’s been more of a 3 and D type his first two seasons

Did you hear Jones talk about how he has been a PG everywhere he has ever played so it was a bit of an adjustment for him not to be the PG here?
That's been a good change for us, barring the first half or so of last season. He does better creating his own spacing and shots when not being asked to run the ball all the time for us.

Gilbert could do it better as a more aggressive player, frequently getting to the rack and to the free throw line, but his reliability in those areas has fallen off a cliff thru this conference slate.

Neither are bad players -- they don't seem to be optimized as the primary ball handlers. Those two play generally better when Tamin is out there orchestrating for them.

Agree that Nojus' lack of minutes could speak volumes. But TJ has been pretty consistent he isn't a coach that is going to play 9 or 10 guys, just to give a player developmental minutes. His preference is to play 8 guys in competive minutes based on pecking order and position. We've seen that with Watson the last couple years. His only minutes basically come if there is an injury.

I would disagree that playing all 3 at the same time or even 2 of Jones, Heise, Indrusaitis on the perimeter was a lineup option in TJ's mind. And TJ doesn't feel Indrusaitis is on the same level as Jones, Momcilovic or Heise at this point to get their minutes.
an 8 man rotation with a 20 game conference schedule seems to be overload. Do other teams do this? And for a tournament to go 3 to 4 days in a row? In Maui, Against Auburn we went 9 deep. Nojus played 7 minutes. Nojus played 9 minutes against Dayton and 11 minutes against CU. Nojus seemed to hold his own at that point in the season. I would have thought that he could have given us 4 minutes a game to give Jones, Tamin, and Gilbert a little more rest here and there. But for some reason they pretty much took him out of the rotation. I hope we use at least 9 on Wednesday, we will need fresh legs against BYU.

Of the teams that finished ahead of us, Tech, Houston, and AZ have similar rotations. BYU went deeper

I think the question is whether these teams rely on having more energy and more effort than the opposition as much as we do to win.

A lot of our success comes from being (near) elite on defense despite not being overly athletic or long. That implies being well coached, but also working your ass off

IMO order of importance in retaining:
Lipsey
Jefferson
Milan
Jackson
Heise
(No inside info) I don't think there is any chance Lipsey goes anywhere else, hope he gets rewarded for that loyalty and seems like the staff and collective folks will treat him right. 4 year players are going to be so rare going forward. I've always assumed he was one of those players that drives the program mentality, like what Campbell has said about Montgomery.

I watched him at Buffalo a few times and thought he played a little too loosely with the ball. He got away with it at that level, but I had concerns how he would transition to when he went up against some of the Big XII guards.

I like him as a shooting guard and a secondary PG. IMO he needs a little room to drive the lane and doesn't beat his guy 1v1 off the dribble enough to be our primary PG. Not a knock on him at all, but he fits his current role to a T.

This is probably accurate, but difficulty to retain would be:
Jefferson
Milan
Jackson
Heise
Lipsey

I hope we can get Lipsey at least something close to what he deserves.

We aren’t able to overpay for production, so I think the same will need to be true for Jefferson and Milan

Do we know how much the basketball players are getting via the House settlement changes?

Yup, as simple and as complicated as that. Amazing some people don't appear to know what is required of the PG vs. SG position.
People know the differences between PG and 2-guard or wing. You are overrating how important playing a tried and true PG is, to literally spell our guards for 4-5 minutes a game, due to it being an emergency situation as a result of injuries.

Kelderman wasn’t facilitating the offense against KSU. He was bringing the ball up across half court (unpressured fyi), passing it off, and then getting the heck out of the way to create space.

I get the defensive component, but if Nojus isn’t capable of being able to do what Kelderman did, that’s a red flag.

Agree

Cade being a pg may be why Cade got some time

But it isn’t why Nojus has gotten so little time when we’ve been without a player at the 2 or 3 spots, and against Houston when we were without 2 players

He’s either not good enough yet, or he’s good enough to contribute but we’re not interested in investing some minutes even when without rotation guys at the 2 and 3

I'd be shocked if McCollum left Drake after 1 season. He stayed DII for several years, winning 4 national championships.

I’d be shocked if he stayed. He probably makes 250k a year at Drake, maybe more. He would make 4 million a year at Indiana. I know not everyone is saying n it for the money but that’s way to much money to ignore

He makes $850k at Drake. The lowest paid Valley coach makes $375k and there are now 4 guys at a million or better.

This isn't 2005.

I agree that he's most likely gone. He was selective and made the move when he did so that he could get to the power league level quickly.
