The PGA tour has a problem. It seems like it is a bunch of bums and Scotty. Kind of boring. I don't know what the solution is to make golf interesting again but this can't continue for much longer. Scotty is very good almost Tiger level play currently. Just seems like the PGA hasn't learned anything.
McIlroy, Schauffele, Morikowa, Spieth, Hovland, JT, Aberg, Homa, etc? Sure, it would be nice for the non-majors if Rahm and DeChambeau hadn't jumped, but even with that, Scottie's competition is way deeper than world number 1's had in the past.

Scottie is on a tremendous run, and I wouldn't take any credit away from him for that.

I disagree. I think Tiger had it tougher. There just aren’t as many savvy pros anymore with weird games that jump up and surprise. Everyone is doing the same thing now (except the two guys you mentioned imo).

I mean, that's kind of true. Hovland has been really bad lately, as has Homa. JT and Spieth, who the hell knows on a given week. Schauffele has lost his form some since the majors last year. Just seems like Scotty is the only guy who can show up and consistently play well.

Name a former #1 who had a tougher field to compete with

I don't know. Obviously it's like any other sport, hard to compare, but beyond Phil, most lists of rivals include Vijay Singh, David Duval, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and lesser names. Rory on there, but he and some others really came in as Tiger left his prime. I'm really not sure that group is better than the group I listed.

I'm not really arguing that he has it easier than prior #1s. My point is more that it has become a really, really stale product. The PGA Tour is left with some really bland guys, and guys that struggle to compete consistently. It's just become a pretty boring product.

I guess I just disagree then. It would be better with Rahm and DeChambeau to be sure, but I enjoy the hell out of it.

Man, what happened to Rory after the Master's? You'd think that finally completing the Grand Slam would free him up, but he's been a bit of a mess lately. Currently +7 and just put it in the water on a par 3 and sitting at 149th out of 153.
I heard an interview with him earlier this week where he basically said that he doesn't have motivation after winning the masters.

What? The tour is still really deep even with losing some star power to LIV. Scottie is just in his own galaxy at the moment.
