The opening ceremony was fine. It was a nice departure from the usual stadium bombast and it showcased the city itself. Some of the ideas were really neat. Celine Dion was incredible, and I’m not even a fan.

I don't generally watch much Olympic soccer, but I've had it on my phone at work most of the day and have enjoyed it more than I thought. I'm watching the US/France match now. Schulte had a busy half, and held up well enough. France looks faster, more physical, more skilled and more poised than us, but we've kept it at a draw so far. We also had a couple decent chances that weren't far off from touching net.

It hasn't been pretty, but we have been mostly decent dealing with France's high pressure. But, wow, we are not good defending set pieces and are playing with fire if we keep giving away cheap corners.
Get used to it. JMHO Go USA.

3 of the guys you flamed here just won a ring last month. Let's pump the breaks a bit
I’d contend I was nicest to those 3, and those 3 play supporting roles on this team.

EDIT: The best player on the team which won “a ring” is not on the Olympic team.

Hey…if they win the thing, I’ll be the first on here saying I was wrong.

Anyone know what the deal is with the Assassins Creed looking person?

I appreciate their ambition, but the whole thing is falling a little flat. This has to be a nightmare to shoot and it's just not great on tv. The cloudy rainy weather is not helping.

Agreed. I think the boats thing is cool, but they take a while so rather than doing a continuous ceremony performance, they’re breaking it up.

it’s obviously setup to make it easier for locals to be a part of it vs limited numbers in stadium. Not the best for TV but I think it’s really cool how accessible it is for everyone instead of only those that can afford tickets.

Agreed. Give me the usual big event in the Olympic Stadium. This just doesn't have the gravitas that the traditional ceremonies have.

What's the protocol on rooting for Spencer Lee?

These opening ceremonies seems to be a “thrying too hard” type event.

(SIAP…I am trying not to look ahead)

Watched earlier today and outside of the team/countries on the boats and Celine Dion at the end, it was pretty much this.

Lady Gaga is super talented but her performances imo often seem so awkward and are deep in the 'trying to hard' column.

They cut out a ton of the shots of the metal horse on the water (maybe 15 minutes or so?) and sped up a major portion of the program. Wonder if they’ll cut out the speeches too?

The horse was like 20 minutes?! That sounds terrible.
