I don't roster backup kickers or team defenses early in the season. Then midway through the season I start looking at which defenses have emerged as being strong, look at their upcoming schedules, and then I'll roster as many as three. I like going into the final 4-5 weeks with multiple defenses rostered that have good matchups in alternating weeks. So every week or nearly every week down the last stretch I'll start whichever D plays the weakest offense and is expected to get me the most points.Solid. I have never understood taking up roster spots with backup kickers or TE's but maybe your league hordes at those positions.
Something I'll do with kickers is stream them weekly and look for kickers who are on the same team as my opponent's best players. So if my opponent in a given week has Breece Hall and/or Garrett Wilson, I'll see if the NY Jets kicker is available and if he is I'll snag and start him. That way, if his guys have big games I know my K will be putting up points as well. For every TD Breece Hall scores, I'm at least getting 1 of those points back on the PAT. If Garrett Wilson has gobs of receiving yards that week, it's likely my K is going to be set up for multiple FG opportunities. If neither of them have big games, that's great, I'll trade a low scoring game out of my K for a low scoring game out of my opponent's RB1 and WR1. Doesn't always work out, but something I keep an eye out for.
