Maybe he did something and were willing to look the other way?
“Firing for cause” could include job performance (they didn’t exactly have a good season). Not familiar with his contract verbiage or what qualifies him for a buy out, but generally speaking, if they can make the firing for cause stick, they will negotiate a “go away” / severance payment and be done with it.
