I guess when this is your motto you better win to keep your job. He was 26-20 at ASU so fired after a 1-2 start this year after coming off an 8-5 season and 6-3 in the conference someone must have really wanted him gone.

It is really not that productive. USC fired Helton on Sept 13, but didn't get Lincoln Riley until after the year was over. No current coach is going to crap on their team and leave early, so your "search" is a nothing burger unless you are targeting someone not active right now. Nebraska was even more stupid paying an extra $7.5 million.
You can contact the coach's agent during the season and see if he is willing to move. Correct, no coach is going to break the contract in the middle of the season and leave, but to think USC had not been contract Riley before it all went public, and he took the job is silly.

Fire a coach now, instead of waiting until after the season, allows you give an asst. coach the job during the meantime, hopefully someone that you might hire if the ones you want do not care to move.
You also have more time to start making "unofficial" contact with coaches you would like to hire, and gauge their interest in the position. Until you narrow the search down to one or two coaches, and go after them.
Does it always work out, no, but at least this way, you are not that school that is reportedly offering the job to multiple coaches and were turned down, because no one hears about it.

Paul Chryst has hit a wall in Madison. UW Admin will be more patient than some.

Itll be interesting to see where expectations for Wisconsin go once they cant talk about winning the worst division in CFB history anymore. They gonna be happy fighting for 4th or 5th at best every year?

Jon Miller's recent pod brought up Chryst and how both Iowa and Sconnie look like 1992 football teams.

Read an article about this today. He has significant ties there.

Leipold's hometown Jefferson, WI is only roughly 30 minutes from Madison.

They want more done offensively and he'd be good for that possibly.

WI may need to be careful what they wish for unless they're able to land Aranda or someone.

The last two weeks were horrible but he's been on par with their best eras.

The direction they go will be interesting.
