I've given up on that first part. My entire thought process in the swing is arm straight and head down.

That's one of my struggles as I've gotten older and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. My impulse is to lift up to catch sight of the ball right away to make it easier for me to follow. That's where it helps to have someone spotting for you.
