My preseason modest guess was somewhere in bubble range (low-10 seed to just missing the field), my optimistic-yet-realistic hope was 7 seed. We might be headed that way if we continue to blow opportunities.

And honestly ISU looks more like a 7 seed. Sometimes we play sharp and could give 2 seed a challenge in R32, other times would lose to a 10.

I'm trying not to over-react too severely to what happened the past two games - 4 seed still is attainable, but I feel less confident about that than I did a week ago.

Not happening, this team is broken. We had Grill back last night raining 3s and even that didn't matter now.
Welp let's just not play the games we have remaining. We're broke right? What's the point then. Who cares that were are night and day home vs road right? Who cares we're a game out of first with a starter who hasn't played in a month. Who cares that our three losses are by a total of 7 points.

Now that we've seen how teams will attack us we can make the appropriate adjustments. What's great is that we have a long week to prepare. That and we play at home.

Our players have immense pride and the season is far from over, plus we're doing remarkably well for a 'transition season'.

Have faith my Cyclone brother. There's still a lot of fantastic basketball to be played yet.

There's too much 'but they led the conference in late January!' without recognizing how the final 6 weeks' schedule doesn't care especially in the B12 currently.

That doesn't excuse last night; that was awful but there are other losses out there that would have negated the title deal.

I still believe this is a good team, but it's hardly a dominant one in a stacked Big 12. Every game feels almost like a coinflip from here on out. Long as TJ has them in the tournament, I'm satisfied, especially considering how recruiting is going and how much individual players seem to be developing.

Tamin came down to Earth last night. Hard. But he's an 18-year old freshman. He'll learn from it.

I don't think this is happening, but I recall the Shayok year where Iowa State looked great in January. They absolutely handed Kansas its ass in Hilton. Everybody was anticipating they were going to compete for a Big 12 title and believed they had the most impressive roster and most talent in the conference.

Then they came back down to Earth and... everything got really toxic. Outside of the two-win year, that was probably my least favorite season on Cyclone Fanatic. I hope people remember this was a team we would have been happy to see make the NCAA tournament (and that's all!) before the season.

It's continually surprising how many on Twitter, especially the sky is falling fans, react to a loss. I've seen several ranting about how this loss and this loss alone unquestionably drops us from a 3 seed to an 8 seed. LOL. I can't.

Social media is generally a cancer and Twitter is the pancreatic version -- the worst of the bad.

I can't wait for it to cease to exist here soon.

Sad it might take Tesla and SpaceX with it, but I consider that a worthwhile sacrifice.

This is what is disappointing about this team. We will be Kansas this week and then lose to a team that we should win...
This team can play with the best but also can lose to the worst. Until we can win with consistency against teams that we should win, we are going to struggle to compete at the top overall for the season.

Admittedly, it is pretty sad that Grill had a career night, if not historic for the program, yet now has nothing to show for it. Guy was like 8 for 9 from 3pt before getting to desperation mode. That's just absurd. Busted. NBA Jam numbers.

A small aside, but I want to thank everybody who frequents this thread (and it really is the same cast of characters) for being civil and calm relative to the rest of the (free) boards. @Jeremy was at his breaking point over some events this weekend in some of the threads, but I've seen none of that here. Maybe the "computer projections" thread title scares people off -- here be the nerds and their calculators. Perhaps that means we can detach ourselves from the game-to-game results a little bit while remaining passionate fans.

There are a handful of threads on this site that are a sanctuary from a lot of the nonsense and this is one. Thanks for keeping it going!

Agreed. The Purdy thread, trash. Anything with basketball(other than this one), trash. Lately, I only come to CF for this and the wrestling threads and that's it. I don't even open the others anymore. Thanks for starting these threads. I've enjoyed them the past couple years.

When we defeat Kansas on Saturday, all this seed line angst will dissipate. Just wait and see.
There shouldn't be any angst. Last night's loss was not a major blow to our resume. It's a quad 1 loss. There will be more of those, I promise.

Couple of overarching things I noticed when scanning Torvik this morning.

The "Game Score" stat for last night was the same as the @KU game. Puts it in perspective that we played about the same quality-wise in both those games.

Also I didn't realize that TTU is #57 overall in the country on there. What a meat grinder with the worst team in the conference is nearly top-50.

Another thing - our offensive rating for last night was pretty comparable to @OU. The defense played 6 points worse, though. That makes sense to me because it felt like we did enough to win on offense (thanks Grill), but just couldn't get the stops we needed down the stretch.

You're describing all teams other than like the all time greats.

Our worst loss this year is either @ Texas Tech (they ended at 2.5 favorites) or @ Iowa (who is a likely NCAA tournament team)

The loss in itself wasn't that bad. The way we lost was excruciating. Similar to the OSU loss when they were actually favored.

There is no evidence we can "lose to the worst". Our losses so far have been 'pick 'ems or we've been slight underdogs.
